Q:
You have a choice, you must get as far back into the country as possible and you have two vehicles to choose from. The first vehicle is a Hummer all jacked up with lift kit, big tire, locking deferential and winch. The second vehicle is a 1953 M38A1 just like it just came right out of the factory commonly known as the Army Jeep. Which one would you chose and why?

Jeep. I've driven both. If you jack up a Hummer your asking to bust your drive train or at least a joint. I not sure if it was the M38A1 but the military Jeeps I drove in the early 80's were badass.
I remember one day a guy asked how I got up into my treestands. They were always so high. I'd just glance over to my Jeep.
Jeep, no question. Ever tried to drive a Hummer down a firebreak or through planted pine? That won't happen. You might enter, but you will be cutting your way out.
I had a 1953 CJ-3 and a 1979 CJ-7. Both gave good service. Honorable mention goes (maybe even a tie) to a 1970 Scout I had also.
If the Hummer is an H-2, it's not even close--I'll take the jeep. The H-2 is just an overpriced, oversized SUV. If we're talking about the military version of the Hummer, the choice isn't so easy. I'd probably still take the jeep cause I could work on it. When they took carburators out & put computers in, they might as well have taken the hood release off too. The 53 Jeep gets my vote.
Jeep, so if something tears up I can fix it. All this plastic and high tech crap on vehicles today is junk in my opinion.
jeep because i would not be scared to beat it up because i know it can take it
Jeep because the hummers are made more for the look and would fall apart.
Jeep 100%, especially if the Hummer was lifted. They perform fine as stock trucks. There are many trails that are simply too wide for a Hummer to get down that a Jeep can do with ease. Though Jeeps are more likely to roll, with the right precaution I'd take a Jeep any day.
Make mine the Willys. Absolutely. Hummer is too wide, too tall, too heavy, too uneconomical, and too hard to see out of. We'll see what happens now that the Chinese are buying the brand.
I'd take the jeep and never doubt my decision. My old neighbor has a jeep that has to be as old as he is and all that he has ever used this poor machine for is to pull logs for firewood out from his wood lot. This is one tough machine!
No dought the jeep.
willy's jeep all day baby.
don't have any experience with the jeep I'm sure they're great. But an old Scout I'd prefer any day over almost anything.
MLH your aging yourself!
Willys? O"BABY!
I remember out in California, my Father had a 2 wheel drive Willys Station Wagon and put it every place a 4x4 almost went. Pedal to the floor and let'r roar!
Back in '72 I tore the 4x4 out of my jeep messing around in the hills of N. Carolina (Fort Bragg). I limped it back to the motor pool and left it there. Three days later I went to the CO and complained that I saw someone using my jeep for mail call and now it's all messed up. Thank God he believed me.
If I had that old jeep today where could I find parts to fix it?
Just reminiscing about the old days.
Yes indeed the Jeep is where its at~!
More "cumfy" in the hummer, but the "Willie" will get you there and back, EVERY TIME !
Hummers always make me wonder what a fella is trying to compensate for... the jeep is the original git-er-done vehicle. No substitutions, exchanges, or refunds...
I'm with the Jeep crowd.
There's only two advantages to the Hummer (military)...
The ability to drive on a flat (and it has a pump), and while a gas Jeep runs on... gas, a military Hummer's adjustments let it run on anything flammable.
Jeep, I rode in an Army issue hummer in Grafenwohr just before I retired and we got stuck, it never happened in a Jeep.
The jeep hands down. That short wheel base and smaller size let you get between the trees and the rocks and over just about anything. There aren't many places you can't go with a good old Army jeep from the '40s.
Jeep, because you can turn it around inside a Hummer.
jeep, been stuck like hell in a hummer several times. big tires only good in swamps.
Willys jeep over hummer any day, Willys jeeps take much smaller trails and is soo much lighter and terra friendly.I cut my teeth on a willys jeep, was the first vehicle (prolly a bad thing)I learned to drive. That thing would go anywhere, I once drove off into a deep hole, the fan splashed water onto the ingnition and killed it. I tied my bandana from a fan blade to the water hose to keep the engine dry till I could back out, what memories!! Never figured out why my dad sold that thing or why I wasnt the giving the chance to buy.
