1999 Gibson Award Winner: Carver Craig Schultz of Critter Getter Game in Reynolds Station, Kentucky, won with this single-sided box call with a zebra wood lid and bottom and a turkey feather painted on the side. Schultz says box calls have the most turkey sound in them of any call type, especially on a windy day.

the best call i ever used did not cost me anything. it was a small wing bone form the wind of a turkey and i have never found anything that worked for me any better then that wing bone my dad gave me when i was 16 years old. Mark comment offensive

i'm not impressed by the fancy calls. any one can glue a bunch of crap on a piece of wood. a real functioning piece of art is a blend of quality, practicality, and durability. Mark comment offensive

as a custom call maker, one of my primary focuses is on introducing hunters to the next level of success in their turkey hunting endeavors. a custom built box call for example, designed for hunting, will far surpass a production unit in its ability to replicate the sounds of the wild turkey, some calls makers, as myself, have aquired the ability to even produce kee-kees,gobbler yelps, gobbles, broken jake gobbles, as well as all the assorted yelps, purrs, cackles and clucks. one thing is for sure," if i would not hunt with it, i would not i would not sell it!" i'm reasonably sure that most cutom call makers feel the same way. i have played most all of these makers calls. not only do they sound like turkey but most are built and tuned specifically to sound better than your run of the mill production call. being a hunting guide i have chosen superior sound and playing consistency over cost. every call i own and hunt with is not only a good looking call that seemingly might be better suited in a display case, but have counted coup in the field. i do not regret in the least jumping from production made calls to sometimes fancy hand high dollar custom calls Mark comment offensive

i can personally vouch for my calls. they all work. some of my calls have been improved, but my overriding desire is a call that works, in the spring or fall turkey woods. a few of my winning national calls have been taken to the turkey woods before they were entered in the nwtf contest. i highly doubt any one would actualy use these calls in the woods. i'd be afraid of dropping them, or even gettting dust on them for that matter. they're just too nice to use, not practical Mark comment offensive

this article should not be called the "best custom calls". maybe the most decorative. do any of these calls sound like a turkey, make a gobbler sing in the spring woods, or actually bring turkeys in for the kill? the term "best" should primarily based on the tone and other sound attributes of a call, not what it looks like. Every year in February the National Wild Turkey Federation's convention attracts hunters from across the country. They come to talk turkey, to ogle taxidermy, to see what's new in guns and gear, and to check out the state of the custom callmaker's art. The callmaking contests draw hundreds of entries in several categories. Among them are the Gibson Award for the the best "working/hunting" box call and the "Decorative" category, in which callmakers allow their imaginations to run wild. With fall seasons under way across the country, we thought you might enjoy this gallery of winners in both categories since 1999.
