Alaska - Nushagak River
Picking Alaska's best fishing stream is like ranking legs on the Rockettes, but the Nush regularly kicks out the most kings. An above-average run should peak in the last two weeks of June, with the best fishing concentrated in the 25 miles up- and downstream from Portage Creek. Fly in from nearby lodges or do the budget tent camps along the river. Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Bristol Bay Region, 907-842-2427; adfg.state.ak.us Guide's Tips Species: King Salmon Guide: Brad Giroux, Nushagak River Adventures, fishthenush.com; 888-844-9737 Rig Specifics: 10-foot medium-heavy rod, Shimano Calcutta 300 reel, 25-pound test Maxima line, drifting eggs for bait, on a swivel with 1 1/2-ounce dropper weight. Quick Tip: Let the fish actually take the bait. People jump the gun sometimes, but (the fish are) going to be there. You need to let them take the bait, turn, and then set your hook. Where to Fish: The lower part of the river, from Portage Creek down into the deep tidewater. Photo From Nushagak River
