Petzal's Picks: The Most Interesting Rifles at the 2008 SHOT Show

DOUBLE YOUR FUN
Or, in case you yearn to be Stewart Granger and carry a double rifle, the Blaser S2 Safari is a very interesting and practical gun that comes in .375 H&H, .500/416, .470 Nitro Express, and .500 3-inch. Its barrels, rather than being welded to a rib, are free floating, the sights are the best I've ever seen for a dangerous-game rifle, and what looks like a safety tab behind the top lever is actually the cocking piece. This means that you can carry the rifle uncocked and completely safe, and when the moment comes, just shove the tab forward and have at it. Or don't, and die. I guess if I shot an elephant in the foot with that, he would think I was a bad dude. I reckon he would quit picking on me. Mark comment offensive

Beautiful rifles. I still have my -06 from 30 years ago and it still shoots good ,. I'd like to own a model 70 in a ott-six. The -06 makes a good clean kill . Mark comment offensive

My gun collecting uncle once asked me, what are you going to shoot with that? I replied with,"anything I want, including jeeps, 4wds, and tanks that have come on to our property to shoot our deer"! Mark comment offensive

Rather than build a bigger cannon, why not spend more time on learning how to shoot. Lets face it, shooting and elephant in the foot does not require a larger caliber. Mark comment offensive

Some guys would use a cannon if they could carry it; trying to buy something to impress people who know better, or don't care. Ego causes men to do some strange things. Learn some skills, learn about guns, work on yourself, rather than trying to buy something to do it for you. A very important person will eventually be impressed with you; You! the T-rex probably doesn't offer much hope for a second follow-up shot. maybe a little to much gun...though you can't kill something deader than dead Mark comment offensive

What the heck? I have shot many guns that kicked hard, but this is ridiculous! Why don't you just go hunting with a cannon. It might be cheaper. Mark comment offensive

This year's SHOT Show was not, to put it mildly, noted for lots of new stuff. Nonetheless, there was no shortage of interesting rifles that are not new, and which you will sure as hell not see at Wal-Mart. --DP
