The matte-black, fully multicoated 40-44 Series (a 1-inch single-piece tube) proved to be a remarkable riflescope for under $200. An inexpensive scope that won’t hold up is no bargain, but the 12-inch, 12-ounce Weaver grouped well while undergoing shock testing on a .45/70 firing hard-hitting Hornady LeverEvolution 325-grain loads. It boxed the 100-yard target—the sights moved up, then right, then down, then left—with the 1⁄4 MOA clicks dead on. Freezing, then dropping the scope into warm water for five minutes with the turret caps off, produced no fogging or leaking. The Ballistic-X Reticle provides holdovers for ranges out to 500 yards for most factory loads. Many hunters will recognize some of the best qualities of the old Weavers. Saying you can’t go wrong for the price here is an understatement. --Thomas McIntyre

This year, 27 experienced testers took more than 500 pieces of gear and put them to extreme, exhausting, and real-life use. Some things broke. Others didn’t work as claimed. Many didn’t live up to expectations. What remained is equipment that met our rigorous standards and then some: the Best of the Best Hunting Gear for 2009.

Now this is a good buy. I'll definitely put one on my next rifle. (hint hint Mr. Petzel)
This sure beats out the $450 hunting knife. Maybe it would a useful addition to these kinds of reviews to include "best value" items that are affordable to most folks.
really nice. looks good for the cost too.
Top that Marlin XL7 with this scope and you would have a good package at a fair price.
Wow, that's a good price for a good piece of equipment.
