Aiming to reduce the transmission of waterborne invasive species, Simms teamed up with Vibram to produce the sticky-rubber StreamTread sole now used on all its wading boots. Like the five other sticky-rubber soles tested, these didn’t give the grip of felt on exceptionally greasy boulders or slick ledge rock, but they held their own on less demanding streambeds and gave significantly better traction on bare rock. The StreamTread sole, however, earned top marks when fitted with the optional HardBite Star Cleat Studs ($40), shown at left. These broad, flat, screw-in cleats are encrusted with carbide chips and recessed into the tread pattern; the result is a low-profile stud that gives a solid, metal-to-rock bite for better traction than plain felt soles on all surfaces, wet or dry. The Cleat Studs are available on five boot models.

Those look like that have great grip! And, for wading boots, they have an okay price.
Now THAT'S a good idea! Man, if I only had video of the fall's I took a couple years ago!
pretty decent price, i got a pair of felts for about the same this fall, if only the store had these then...
I would hope the studs stay in, I would be skeptical of that screw in design...
I have used these cleats for a few years now in felt, (Simms has a version that screws into felt) and I'm really excited to see how they work in the Vibram. They never came out of the felt and being a 5' 4" woman I won't walk the river without them. Happy to see them chosen along w/ the boot as your pick for 2010.
I became aware of these cleats and the inventor after having slipped several times the previous fishing months - I haven't slipped since. What a great product!! What a great guy that invented the cleats.
anyone try these out yet??
I fish Michigan rivers and I like the Freestone wading boot design with felt because of it's fine ankle support and performance on clay and slippery rocks. I recently attempted to purchase a replacement pair in felt and was dismayed to discover that Simms has discontinued felt soles in favor of the Vibram sole. I finally gave in to the manufacturers claims of being just as good as felt and purchased the rubber soles. I am an experienced wader and must report that the rubber soles do not perform as advertised especially on clay and actually resulted in my first "float of the hat" experience in many years. Fortunately the only injury was to my pride but the experience so has left me significantly less confident when wading. I have yet to try the rubber soles with screw in cleats. While this should help the traction on clay, I am told the cleats will cause damage to the floor of fiberglass boats. I long for the return of felt. Sorry Simms.
It's a good product. Heavy-duty shoes! classifieds |ads|memory foam mattress
