The break-action .50-caliber CVA Apex is the undisputed Best of the Best for 2009. It scored top marks for shootability, accuracy, durability, and design with the test team, and the price is outstanding. The fit and balance of this solid, 8-pound gun are exceptional, enabling the shooter to pick up the target quickly. The crisp trigger was a standout at less than 3 pounds and can be credited, along with the performance of the Spanish-made Bergara barrel, for the Apex’s exceptional accuracy. At 25 yards, bullet holes were overlapped; at 100 yards, three-shot groups ranged from 1 to 11⁄2 inches. Rubberized grips on the fore-end make shooting comfortable. The E-Z Open breech makes loading and cleaning a snap; simply pull the front of the trigger guard to unlock the break action. Combine that with the ambidextrous buttstock and reversible cocking spur, and you have one versatile firearm. --Brad Fenson

OK, I haven't seen this weapon in person, but looking at this picture, isn't there something missing? I thought it was a shotgun just looking at the picture. Where's the ram rod?
That is not a muzzle loader. They have side hammers and exposed nipples.
Good catch, gentlemen. This gun has interchangeable barrels, and we mistakenly showed the rifle in its centerfire configuration. We've now replaced the picture with the proper image.
OK this is another load of crap. Don't get me wrong, I like the gun and I know it is a muzzleloader........ But.... CVA has been making a big deal about how this gun is sooooo affordable, but the T/C Encore (which IS a better gun) only cost about $500. How is the gun more affordable if it costs more? I just don't get that little peice of misinformation.........
Well, hjohn429, My Encore, which I hate cost a lot more than $500. It wouldn't hit anything until i bought a Bergara barrel, and went to Blackhorn 209 powder. I have 4 barrels for this piece of junk. I also own a CVA Apex, it is beautiful, it feels like a gun, the Encore does not. I paid $499 for the Apex at Cabelas. I love it. It has a great 2 1/2# trigger, my Encore---after a trigger job still has 3 1/2#. I will be getting more barrels for the Apex.
I own 2 encores and yes--they can be had for around $500 by sticking with a basic blued / synthetic package. My 2 shoot great , even better after I swopped out the hinge pin for a Belhm 1x and a new hammer spring. With 130gr 777 pellets and 250 T/C bonded sabot , I am repeatedly getting 1 1/2" groups at 100 yd.s . I will say that neither one "likes" CVA powerbelts or Hornady 240 gr rounds when I tried them. I even use the 26 inch 12 Ga barrel and extended choke tube to shoot trap ( works great- love to get a 30 inch tube just for that).
That being said, if a switch barrel isn't necessary, the BP to get is the Omega. I have fired half a dozen of these and ALL were extremely accurate and "liked" anything that they were loaded with . My father has backed off his from 150 gr to 100 gr of pyrodex pellets and gone from 295 powerbelts to sabot 240 gr hornady's and no change in accuracy .Regardless of what he's fed it ,it keeps putting them into no worse than 2" groups when he does his part ..
I want this muzzleloader
how can anyone get behind a compant liket this that has so many lawsuits against it for their products blowing up in peoples' faces and causing serious bodily injury?
Is Field and Stream going to start sharing in the liability with this company? I know many people that have owned one of these and never had any problems, but get on the internet and look around at the information out there dealing with these cases.
This company can't be trusted with your life. Take the time to educate yourself on this product before you decide to save a little money by buying this instead of something else.
Every Muzzleloading rifle company has had product liability complaints and lawsuits. TC has a bunch for gun that go off when you drop them, Knight has a couple, Traditions has had a couple guns blow up. Remington, Winchester and Glock have had tons more lawsuits and people still buy their guns. Just because some lawyer and his cronies got together and created a internet circus with the help of guy who does card tricks for money does not mean a product is not viable. CVA has been the number one selling front loader for more than ten years and every year they sell more black powder guns than all the other makers combined. Yes, the old out of business company made some bad guns in 95/96 get over it. Just because someone files a lawsuit doesn't make them or their lawyers right. I had a T/C rifle blow up in my face, I only had a few small burns and a couple pieces of metal that just missed my eye. I didn't sue, guess if I had an ambulance chasing lawyer I could have. The only people who would have gotten anything would have been the lawyers, investigators and some expert witness paid to say what the lawyer wants him to. Check your sources Vanilla
I'd like to know where hjohn429 can buy new T/C encores for $500.00.Cause I would buy them all day for that!I know around here there about $800.00.
I have not seen any other articals on the new CVA,I've had my T/C encore for 5yr.,I have 5 barrels & all shoot very well, jut the other day we went out to site in just to make sure we were still on target,7mm mag & 270win,both 26" ss,with bench & leadsled at 100yds,7mm mag 3 shots 3/4",270win 3 shots 1" & two of them made a figure eight,I will take that kind of Junk all day.
I own a T/C and now have an Apex as well, not a huge debate to me.They are both great guns. The apex seems to be a tighter gun to me and shoots very well. I am also very pleased with my T/C and it shoots great. I think that I will have to agree with the test group on this one for 2009. It is the best that I have seen this year.My hope is that all of the gun makers will continue to improve their products and be able to keep cost down so we can afford them.
This looks like a very nice muzzle loader it a price like this, its a good deal. It sounds accurate and sounds reliable. with open breech it sounds easy to re-load and i cant wait to buy one for myself.

Ok, I have a CVA Wolf and I have shot approx 150 rounds through it in a year an a half. If you actually look at the history of CVA most of the bad guns were made in the early to mid 90's. I have come close to the max acceptable load for the firearm and it has not bulged, blown up, etc. Keep in mind mine is well below (read:cheaper, lower quality) this beautiful piece above and still proforms well beyond my expectations. Also if you read into what happened with those blown barrels a few of them were operator error ( 3 pellets of 777, more than 150 gr of powder, etc). In my oppinion the new CVA products are at par with Traditions, TC, and Knight.
will be my next muzzleloader i buy!! i have a CVA Kodiak now and its time to get a new one!
I have a Wolf and an Apex, the wolf shoots good with 90 grns of pyrodex and a 295 power belt, has a tennis ball group at 100 yards, Great small gun, with a big punch. The Apex has just today decided it wanted, 2 t7 pellets and a Thor 300 grn solid copper bullet. I ended up with this load because of solid copper bullet is going to stay together, I will shoot, the wolf with the Thor bullet before I hunt with it, because I am fearfull of the soft power belt bullets performance on deer. With a muzzleloader 1 shot I dont want any problems. I think the Apex is a good gun with the trigger adjusted as lite as possible, it does well off the bench. It will go to the woods on Nov 17th I hope to have a report on its performance after that. I do not want to trail the deer where I hunt, and with my health issues, so thats where the Thor bullet comes into play.
I have a CVA wolf that I purchased this year it is my first muzzle loader. I shot myself a nice fat Doe at abut 65 yds. useing 100 grains of Shockeys Gold and a 295gr., powerbelt, mainly because thats what came in the outfit I bought from Buds gun shop. She ran less than 20yds. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Pancho, while entitled to his opinion, sounds like he has a axe to grind and one can only wonder about his motives and whose payroll he's on. A co-worker bought a Wolf at the same time and he is as happy with his as I am.
I considered the CVA Apex, but as a Encore owner I settled on the Savage 10 MLBSS-II. bad news is I received the rifle Tuesday before season and din't have a chance to work up a load and sight it in properly. The good new is My Brother has one and shooting less than MOA. Current load is TC 250 gr Sure Shock and 68 grains of IMR4198. A really a no fuss load, shot 50 rounds without cleaning, beat that !
i have a cva accura it shoots one inch groups at one hundred yrds i use 300 dead centers and 100 gr of 777 fffg powder as for guns blowing up some moroons never learn any gun can be blownup some folks hunt from tree stands use sents shoot deer two hundred yards away there friends chase deer to them called drives me im a true hunter on the ground shoot em 15 to 50 yardsshot a8 pt this year at 20 yds could see his eye lashes looking at me one shot in the neck no tracking no pain for him a memory i will have forever walk in drag it out
