Mathews McPherson Series Monster XLR8 ($959) mathewsinc.com
Weight: 4.4 lb. • Length: 331⁄2" • Brace Height: 5" • maximum speed: 360-plus fps, advertised IBO • Let-off: 80 percent
THE LOWDOWN In our tests, the Monster XLR8 averaged an astonishing 321 fps—a hair faster than the Omen despite the higher let-off, though it should be noted that the Monster’s “28-inch” draw was actually about 3⁄8 inch longer than the Omen’s. The centerpiece of what Mathews calls the fastest, most efficient dual-cam system ever is an innovation dubbed the Advanced Vectoring System, or AVS, which helps store more energy, synchronizes the cams, and facilitates a comparatively smooth draw cycle—demanding, to be sure, but fairly smooth. I found this bow very steady on target and had no problem shooting groups inside 3 inches at 30 yards.
HITS The Monster XLR8 draws more like a single-cam than a dual-cam, with fairly manageable cam turnover. It’s also relatively easy to hold at full draw.
MISSES It’s a tad heavy by today’s standards, but that can facilitate better accuracy. Some shooters will find the grip clunky. It’s also loud—more so than the Omen.
WHO SHOULD BUY Speed shooters who prefer a smooth draw cycle and increased let-off over quietness
