Outdoor Skills - Hunting Q&A
Q: Is there such a thing as a big-game cartridge that's also suitable for varmint hunting? I'm looking for something to use out West and also to hunt woodchucks with here at home. -Stephen Plumbley, Elsie, Mich.

A: Most big-game cartridges recoil far too much for varmint hunting, and most varmint cartridges are not nearly powerful enough for big game. I think the closest you can come is the .257 Roberts. With 87-grain bullets it's fine for woodchucks, and with 115-grain slugs it will take down any deer or antelope.
