Where Does Your Dog Rank on the AKC's New Popularity List?

    by Chad Love

Two years ago at this time I wrote a Field Notes blog post on the American Kennel Club's annual list of the nation's most popular dogs and how it relates to the sorry state of hunting dogs in this country. In that post I asked the question of why, at a time when dogs have never been more popular, the sporting breeds (barring labs) continue to sink into obscurity. Well, the AKC just released its list of the 20 most popular dog breeds for 2010.

Deer List: F&S Lists The Top Whitetail States, Part I

    by Dave Hurteau

What’s the number one state for tagging a trophy whitetail? Where’s the best place to take any deer, buck or doe? How about the prime destination for a big public-land buck? The answers are on this map, found on pages 48 and 49 of the February 2011 issue of Field & Stream. Part of our “Deer Crazy” cover story, it reveals the nation’s Top 10 Trophy Whitetail States, Top 10 Any-Whitetail States, Top 5 Public-Land Whitetail States, and more. That said, we figured you might also like to know where your state ranks, even if it’s not in the top ten. Maybe you’d like to see the stats behind our rankings. So, in a series of blog posts here on Whitetail 365, we’re going to lay out the complete state rankings and explain how we arrived at them.

Football Food: Elk Chorizo Stuffed Jalapenos

    By David Draper

To help you prep for the Super Bowl this Sunday, we’re featuring a week’s worth of football food on the Wild Chef.

Simple and delicious, jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon have become a Super Bowl staple. But I wanted to take these tasty treats for a walk on the wild side, and what better way than with the last of my elk chorizo. The spicy Mexican sausage would be a great complement to the fiery bite of the jalapeno.

Foiles Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Wildlife Violation Charges

    -- Chad Love

A well-known duck hunter and call maker who was indicted last month on numerous felony wildlife violations has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

From this story in the Springfield, Illinois State Journal-Register:

“Fallin’ Skies” duck hunter Jeffrey Foiles entered a not guilty plea Thursday to a 23-count indictment accusing him of violating federal wildlife laws. Moments later, Foiles learned he would be facing charges in Canada, too. Foiles, best known for his series of "Fallin' Skies" hunting videos, also is a waterfowl hunter, guide, call-maker and operator of Foiles Migrators Inc., a retail business near Pittsfield. He also is one of two owners of the Fallin’ Skies Strait Meat Duck Club in Pike County.

Nebraska May Allow Pheasant Hunting in Roadside Ditches

    -- Chad Love

From this story in the Lincoln Journal Star:
They call it road hunting. Except, they don't hunt roads, they hunt pheasants. South Dakota and Iowa are two states in the pheasant belt that allow hunters to pursue roosters in road ditches. Nebraska currently outlaws the practice, but the Game and Parks Commission wants to reconsider road hunting. On Jan. 21, commissioners assigned staff members to investigate what it would take to allow roadside hunting for rooster pheasants. The commissioners didn't set a deadline, but staffers will likely prepare a report on the topic within the next few months.

QDMA Founder Named “Conservationist of the Year”

    by Scott Bestul

Joe Hamilton, founder of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA), has been named Budweiser’s “Conservationist of the Year” beating out three other finalists for the prestigious honor. Hamilton accepted the award during the Golden Moose Awards ceremony, held during the 2011 SHOT Show in Las Vegas.

I met Joe two years ago at a QDMA function, and the man is simply a class act. Among the most respected biologists in the country, Hamilton has spent his over 40 years studying wildlife and is an expert on many species, from amphibians to black bears. He’s among a handful of living biologists who has received a Career Achievement Award from The Wildlife Society, an association of professional biologists and researchers. Joe has also worked with other groups, such as Ducks Unlimited and The Nature Conservancy, to create conservation easements and expand hunting opportunity. But you’d never guess at his pedigree if you met this modest, friendly man on the street.

Using Video Cameras as Dog Training Tools

    by Chad Love

It's common for athletes to use video cameras as training tools. Watching yourself is a great way to improve your casting, your shotgunning skills or even your golf swing (if you're into that sort of thing), but how many dog owners use video cameras to improve their training? There are a ton of retriever, flusher and pointing dog training clips on YouTube, so obviously someone out there's doing it. Taping and then reviewing your training sessions and hunts I think it would be a fantastic way to identify problem areas not only for the dog, but you as well.

Food Photo Friday: Venison Pastrami on Rye

    by David Draper

On Wednesday, I wrote about my great venison pastrami experiment. Today I'm showing you what I did with it: pastrami on rye with provolone and a good yellow mustard. Served with a side of pickled green beans. Now that’s a lunch.

Keep those food photos coming. You can send them fswildchef@gmail.com and we’ll post the best ones here.

When Getting Married, Having Children, etc...Remember to Consider Season Start Dates

    by Phil Bourjaily

Today is my 27th wedding anniversary. Having married a wonderful woman who has put up with the decidedly non-glamourous life of a freelance writer –- inconsistent paychecks, dog hair and pheasant feathers in the house, my travel schedule -- I wouldn’t change a thing, except maybe our wedding date. Most of our hunting seasons are over by late January but every once in a while my anniversary does get in the way of something I’d like to do outdoors with a gun.

Not only that, my younger son’s birthday falls on November 20, right in the heart of duck and pheasant seasons. It’s not that I don’t want to celebrate family milestones, it’s just that I wish they didn’t take place during hunting season.

MBF Reader Awards: Did You Make the Cut?

    by David DiBenedetto

One of the great—and not always so great—aspects of blogging is the immediate response a writer gets from his readers in the form of comments. And as I’m winding down my time as a Man’s Best Friend blogger I decided to recognize some of you who have made it memorable. So herewith, the first—and probably last—Man’s Best Friend Reader Awards.

Most Valuable Commenter: There have been a number of great, thoughtful commenters on MBF, but none could compete with the reliability and enthusiasm of Kelmitch. Day after day, Kelmitch was right with Pritch and I following the ups and downs of our training. And always with an encouraging word…unlike the next award winner…

Best Take Down: A few readers decided I wasn’t worth the pixels this blog is posted on, but none did so as colorfully as BeardogRed. After a post where I complained that that the sporting dogs in the Westminster show looked nothing like the Goldens and Labs you see in the field, BeardogRed got a little upset. Delivering the coup to grace with this statement: “Son, you are like a Baby Bird, All Mouth and Ass.” We apparently have our differences Beardog, but I applaud your creativity!
