    BuckTracker: Alabama Dreamin’

    Bucktracker1

Last weekend—seated comfortably in an Alabama box blind overlooking a food plot on a sunny, pleasant afternoon—I couldn’t resist text-messaging a buddy back in the Midwest.

“How is the weather back in paradise?” I queried, feigning innocence.

“Stupidly cold. How ‘bout you?” was Ted’s too-good-to-pass response.

“Well I’m sure glad there’s a roof on this blind to keep the darn sun off me.” I replied, unable to resist.

My friend will undoubtedly get me for that remark. We’re slogging through an epic winter in the upper Midwest, and joking about weather is only way to bear it. And my Alabama hunt revealed another first; the place I traveled to hunt was 80 degrees warmer than home….and I actually liked that. When I left Alabama on Tuesday temps were pushing 75. Two-plus hours later on my plane’s approach to Minneapolis, the flight attendant somewhat cruelly reminded us that the thermometer was several notches below zero.

Sigh. I did not kill a deer, but I did escape an ice-box winter for a few days and that was surely enough. Had a wonderful time, ate some great southern cooking (okra for the first—but not last—time), and basked in hospitality. I’ll come back any time I’m invited.
One of my compadres did shoot the fine buck picutred and two does while the rest of our crew went deerless. None of us cared a bit, because back home looks a lot like the scene in the photo below.

So how’s the winter in your neck of the woods?

Wisconsin Natural Resources Board Wants Baiting Ban

    From The Capital Times:

The state Natural Resources Board voted unanimously Wednesday to ask the Wisconsin Legislature to approve a statewide ban on baiting and feeding of deer.

Baiting and feeding is already banned in most of southern Wisconsin, in the zone where Chronic Wasting Disease has been detected in deer, because scientists believe the fatal brain-wasting disease can be spread when animals congregate. But hunters and residents of northern Wisconsin have opposed the ban, because some like to feed the animals during hard winters and others like to put out food to draw the deer toward their guns.

BuckTracker: What’s Up in Sioux Falls?

Ok, is Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the home of a nuclear site I don’t know about? Several weeks back I posted photos of (and a video link to) a giant whitetail sent to me by Sioux Falls resident Bill Corbet. That monster buck had been filmed in velvet and photographed in hard antler living happily in a no-hunting zone within the city limits.

So when a pic of a huge buck—one that had been (reportedly) killed by a vehicle in Sioux Falls—landed on my desk this week, I jumped to the hasty assumption that Bill Corbet’s buck was dead. But when I called Corbet to offer my condolences, he said “if he’s dead I haven’t heard about it. Last I know he was alive and well. Send me the picture you’ve got.”

Well I did, and Bill called me back minutes later. “Not him,” he said, obviously relieved. “Compare that buck’s rack to the one I sent you. There’s no way that’s the same deer.” And of course Bill is right, a fact proven by comparing nothing more than the right sides of these two tremendous racks.

Alright, I get the big-metro-buck thing up and down. They can’t be hunted (or hunted much), so they grow older. But even when bucks grow old they don’t always sprout antlers like these two giants. Which brings us to the conclusion that there is one incredible gene pool in this slice of the world…or a nuke plant I’m unaware of.

    BuckTracker: Mystery Monster

It is certainly no mystery that Iowa produces some gargantuan bucks each fall. The buck posted here, however, is something of an enigma…at least to me. I’ve seen several photos of this tremendous whitetail in recent weeks, all with the same title; "Lockridge Monster." No details as to who the hunter is, where in Iowa it was taken, or what the beast might score. Some who’ve forwarded the pics to me claim the woman in the photo is the lucky shooter, but thus far no one can confirm this.

So once again I’m asking for help. If you know any details about this amazing buck, please chime in. I’d love to hear more about it!

On a personal note, I am leaving tomorrow for my first whitetail hunt in Alabama. Looking forward to not only seeing this wonderful state, but also to escaping another cold front that threatens the upper Midwest. Call me a wimp, I don’t care!

    Pennsylvania Crossbow Vote A Toss-Up

    From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

At the last meeting of the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners, the momentum seemed firmly behind a proposal to make crossbows legal during archery deer and bear seasons.

Since then, however, much has changed on the board, where roster changes could impact next week's final vote on the controversial issue.

    Eleventh Hour Monster

    buck

The late archery season has been over for nearly a month here in Minnesota, and already I miss it. I joke about my passion for this lonely time to my hunting buddies, telling them "all the good hunters are done by November. December is for guys like me." But truthfully, I’d hunt then even if I’d already tagged a nice buck.

The cold, quiet weeks of December are a wonderful time for me to say goodbye to hunting for another year. I’m searching hard for deer, of course, but I’m also reflecting; on little successes, muffed opportunities, lessons learned, deer seen, bucks that survived, and those that didn't.

Of course, my ultimate fantasy is to tag a monster whitetail on the season’s last day. What better way to wring out every drop of action from an entire fall? Illinois bowhunter Jack Jensen accomplished that very feat only a couple of weeks ago, shooting this massive Shelby County nontyp that was green-scored at 220”. Congratulations to Mr. Jensen! Anyone have a good late-season story—or harvest photo—to share?

Archery’s Answer to “The Booth Babe”

I have followed with interest fellow blogger Chad Love’s post about the SHOT show’s employment of booth babes. I have been to a couple of SHOT shows and, of course, could not help but notice these, um…spokesmodels. In fact, my inaugural SHOT visit was my first trade show of any kind, and I was so naive I actually thought these women knew something about the products they represented! Once I realized the absurdity of this notion, I was embarrassed for both me and them!

I recently returned from a brief visit to the ATA (Archery Trade Association) show in Indianapolis, where booth babes are not widely used. Oh, you see a comely 20-something model hanging by the odd booth, but booth babes certainly do not reign over ATA like they do SHOT.

Of course this doesn’t mean that ATA is not bereft of beauty. It is, however, beauty of a different kind; women who actually hunt! The women pictured in this post are sure to attract a crowd at ATA, and it’s not just because they’re easy on the eye. Each is an accomplished huntress in her own right, star (well co-star, anyway; they share fame with their husbands) of a TV/video series, and often an intelligent spokesperson for a hunting company whose products she actually uses.

So what are your thoughts? Are these women a more evolved alternative to the booth babe?

Video Report: Snow-Sled Deer Slaughter; $10,000 Reward
Five deer died in what [Wisconsin’s Waupaca County Sheriff's detective Don] Conat calls a "thrill killing" of deer by running over them with snowmobiles.

Investigators also say they've found snowmobile parts near the scene. They're hoping those parts yield fingerprints or identifying information on at least one of the sleds.

Conat says snowmobile clubs have offered a combined $9,000 in rewards for information leading to arrests. Waupaca County Crime Stoppers has offered another $1,000.
