Discussion Topic: Should Felons Go Hunting?

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

From WNYT News Channel 13 in Albany, NY:

Convicted felons are banned from possessing firearms [in New York]. They can still get hunting licenses but no one is in charge of making sure they don't get guns. . . .

Of the more than 102,000 hunting licenses issued in our area last year, 221 went to convicted felons.

Eight felons reported deer kills, with five admitting to illegally using a rifle or shotgun, but the real number may never be known.

Check out this video, and tell us what you think. Should felons be allowed to use a rifle or shotgun for hunting? What about a muzzleloader? A Bow?

Connecticut May Fight Lyme With Longer Seasons

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

    From the Yale Daily News:

In an effort to control the risk of Lyme disease. . . Georgina Scholl, research chair of the Fairfield County Municipal Deer Management Alliance, is lobbying the state to ease regulations on deer hunting. Scholl’s proposal, which was presented to Gov. M. Jodi Rell this week, urges legislators to lengthen the hunting season beyond mid-September, to the end of December, and to increase bag sizes — the number of deer that hunters can shoot in a season.

    Sound like a good idea?

NFL Quarterbacks Favre and Romo Talk Hunting

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

So, what do the leaders of a pair of 10-1 teams talk about before clashing in one of the most important match-ups of the season? Hunting, of course.

From Yahoo! Sports, reporting on the Dallas Cowboy’s 37-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers:

There was the Romo-Favre storyline, which got rolling when they smiled and laughed through a chat on the field about 1 1/2 hours before kickoff. What did they say?

"Exchanging recipes and stuff," Romo said. "Guy talk. I don't know. We just talked about hunting or something. . . .”

Missouri's Big Spring Sparks Congressional Scrape

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

A battle is brewing over federal wilderness protection for the largest freshwater spring in North America.

    From the Environment News Service:

The Missouri Wilderness Coalition, an informal network of 18 conservation groups, says Big Spring area and six other areas of the[Mark Twain] national forest totalling [sic.] 49,323 acres need new protections that only Congress can provide, because they are now being targeted for logging and roadbuilding by the U.S. Forest Service. . . .

This week the coalition ran into trouble when U.S. Representatives Jo Ann Emerson and Roy Blunt, both Missouri Republicans, announced their joint opposition to the wilderness protection proposal.

Did Bobby Knight Step Out of Bounds While Dove Hunting?

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

Bobby Knight's famously fiery temper seems to have publicly flared again, but not on the basketball court. This time it was in a Lubbock, Texas, dove hunting field. According to this Dallas Morning News story, the Texas Tech men's basketball coach and NCAA all-time wins leader stands accused of accidentally shooting a local woman in the foot, raining birdshot into homeowner James Simpson's swimming pool, then spraying pellets into the man's neck and back after Simpson complained Knight was hunting too close to his house.

"Coach Knight did not shoot over there. He did not intentionally shoot at him. It's such a frivolous accusation with no merit," said Knight's hunting partner Bubba Curtis.

Indeed, there appears to be no hard evidence to support the shooting accusations, but the video Simpson taped during his confrontation with the coach certainly seems to paint Knight in a less that chivalrous light.

Check it out for yourself (here's the video), then tell us your reaction.

Discussion Topic: Are Rifles As Safe As Shotguns?

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

From southwestern New York’s Star-Gazette News:

Nine days into the regular hunting season for deer, it doesn't appear that the use of rifles in some [formerly shotgun-only] Southern Tier counties is having a major impact on safety.

At the urging of sportsmen's groups and many county farm bureaus, a new law passed by the state Legislature and signed by the governor this year lifted a longtime ban on rifles for hunting big game in Chemung, Steuben and Yates counties. . . .

Some people felt the change would mean more accidental shootings.
So far, area law enforcement agencies say that hasn't happened.

What do you think? Should more shotgun-only areas lift the ban on centerfire rifles?

Wisconsin Hunter Gets 69 Years in Hmong Killing

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

From an Associated Press story in The New York Times:

A white hunter convicted of killing a Hmong man as they both stalked squirrels in the woods was sentenced Wednesday to 69 years in prison.

James Nichols, 28, of Peshtigo, was convicted last month in the death of Cha Vang, a 30-year-old father of five. The slaying rekindled racial tensions in northern Wisconsin, where a Hmong deer hunter fatally shot six white hunters in 2004.

Marinette County Circuit Judge David Miron gave Nichols the maximum sentence, noting his history of violence against animals and others, his juvenile record and a previous conviction for burglary.

''The community needs as much protection as it can possibly get,'' Miron said. ''The best we can do is make sure you can never do harm again.''

Discussion Topic: Are You Ready to Hunt Western Wolves?

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

From an Associated Press story in the Idaho State Journal:

[A] proposed [wolf] management plan, issued Monday by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, . . . recommends using a regulated seasonal hunt as the tool of choice for managing, and in some cases, thinning the number of wolves roaming the state. . . .

It also recommends suspending all wolf hunting activity when there are 20 or fewer breeding pairs left in the state.

''We're focusing on managing conflicts with this plan,'' [IDFG large carnivore coordinator Steve] Nadeau said. ''And clearly, that means population reductions in some areas. Other areas, we'll be looking to stabilize.''

Pink Guns Flying Off The Shelves

By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love

    From The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:

    91821_256

Two months after opening its Lubbock store, Gander Mountain is having a hard time keeping the pink 9 mm Taurus pistol on the shelves. . . .

"There are a lot of women who don't get into shooting sports because they don't want to be perceived as being unfeminine," [director of Texas’ Becoming an Outdoors Woman program] Ashley Mathews said. "If it helps young women or girls eliminate their hesitation to get involved in shooting sports, then that's a wonderful thing."

    What to you think?
