Caption Contest: Write the Best... Win a Prize

I know I said I'd be back at you with another caption contest on friday, but Deeter's out guiding so I promised him I'd cover his back. By now most of you should know the rules... Whomever writes the best caption to the image above (in our estimation) wins a prize. This week we're going to change it up a little bit and instead of winning gear, the winner will get...

...one of the best fishing documentaries I've ever seen. Red Gold  was made by Ben Knight and Travis Rummel on the prospects of the Pebble Mine being built at the headwaters of Bristol Bay in Alaska. Be sure to check out the rest of Felt Soul's movies here.  These guys are amazing!

    Good Luck,

Behind the Scenes: Fly Fishing Video

The last few years have seen glut of independent films based around fly fishing footage.  Some, incredibly well produced and and some not so...  One of my favorite film makers, RA Beattie (a colorado local) just released his first full-length DVD with 4 feature films, 6 shorts, 4 award winners, and of course the obligatory "fishporn" cut. It's called Nervous Water and is exceptional. I've often thought about trying to make fishing videos, but after watching The Making of First Decent I realize I probably don't have...

...the story telling capabilities, technical know how, or intestinal fortitude to do so. If you ever thought you could just "go shoot" and make a quality fishing film - think again.  It takes a ton of planning, a little luck, lots of hard work, and a pretty serious skill set. Check out the rest of Nervous Water at RA's website and put aside some time for some great fishing film...

Caption Contest: Write the Best... Win Gear

Yes I know, some of you might have seen this image in the magazine a couple of months ago. You didn't get to write your own witty caption for it though.

We'll give it about a week and whomever comes up with the best caption for this photograph will win...

...a sweet new pair of polarized Smith - Shelter fishing shades. They are pictured below and feature a Polarchromic brown lens, lifetime warranty, and retail for $119.00.

Just log in and enter your caption below.

The Worlds Best Fishing Point-and-Shoot Camera?

Two weeks ago I wrote a story for the main page titled, "The Beginner's Guide to Better Fishing Photography". This week, thanks to my boys over at moldychum.com, I have stumbled upon what possibly might be the worlds best point and shoot camera for fishing related activities. The camera in question is the...

...Pentax Optio W80. It's waterproof down to 16 feet for two full hours if need be. Can tolerate drops over 3 feet, shoots in temperatures to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, has an effective 12.1 megapixel sensor, a huge 2.5 inch screen, and a wide 28mm lens. It also supposedly has an insane macro mode which lets you shoot as close as 1cm to your subject. Here's the kicker though - it shoots HD video. What other camera could you want in your vest pocket?  This is an amazing little camera for the price - $299.

As an owner of their previous model, the W30 I can attest to quality of this line of point-and-shoots and would suggest it in a second for any fisherman wanting to slip a very powerful little camera in your pocket. The cameral is supposedly available mid July. I just might have to request a "field test" model. ;)

Stimulus Watch: Any Money For Fishing?

At least once a week I get blast emails from my old man. Typically they're jokes or family happenings, etc... This week I got a link to Stimuluswatch.org.

StimulusWatch.org was built to help the new administration keep its pledge to invest stimulus money smartly, and to hold public officials to account for the taxpayer money they spend. We do this by allowing you, citizens around the country with local knowledge about the proposed "shovel-ready" projects in your city, to find, discuss and rate those projects. These projects are not part of the stimulus bill. They are candidates for funding by federal grant programs once the bill passes.

My fair state of Colorado had 201 "shovel-ready" projects on tap for a total of almost 2.5 billion dollars. Doubt we'll see half that...  Of those maybe one tenth had to do with water projects and of those maybe one or two dealt with actual stream/lake improvements or rehabilitation to riparian areas.  Bummer.

My question to you: Is there any fish/river/lake conservation projects that you know of in your state that are being funded by the stimulus package?  Better yet, pretend you've got the go ahead on your own "shovel-ready" conservation project near home.  Money is no object. What would you do?

    More PETA Absurdity

    seakitten

Congratulations to PETA for once again breaking the absurdity barrier.  The group just launched a new campaign to rename fish "sea kittens."  No, I am not making this up.  Apparently, the feeling is the "what's in a name" effect will stop the cruelty of fishing.  You know, if you imagine putting a hook in a little kitty's mouth, you'll be less inclined to drag those poor scaly creatures around with rod and reel.

I don't care what you call them.  I'm going to catch them.  And eat them.  I might even go for some sea kitten world records.

In fairness, I think we should apply the same line of thinking on the good folks at PETA.  From now on, I will call them the human carp society.
