Cermele: A Skinny Little Creature, Part II

    By Joe Cermele

Last week I discussed YUM's new Shakalicious Worm, noting intrigue with the design, but skepticism regarding durability. As promised, I fished the Shakalicious over the weekend for smallmouths. Well, let me tell you, I'm always envious of Dave Petzal at the Gun Nut blog. When he tests a rifle, he need not worry that the target will not show up on the range that day. Nor is there much concern that the chamber will refuse to open and accept a bullet he wants to test. Testing lures is a whole other story.

Cermele: A Skinny Little Creature, Part 1

    By Joe Cermele

A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths. – Comedian Steven Wright

Pictured below is the F2 Shakalicious Worm, the latest creation from YUM. These baits fall into the popular mass of plastics designed for the Shaky Head presentation. I'm going to go ahead and rope the Shakalicious into the "creature" category, too. But the difference between this and other creatures is that it's a skinny little thing. This poses a question of durability.

Cermele: One Chance at Off-Limit Water

    By Joe Cermele

That's my uncle in the photo below holding a fat largemouth he caught two weeks ago in a private pond at a vineyard/country club. No, the next photo in the series is not us getting arrested. Without going into detail as to how, he has managed to get permission to snipe bass from several area golf courses. Really...it's a hassle-free experience. But for the three times a year we hit these private spots together, I drive by 50 that I would kill for permission to fish.

    Cermele: Lures that Consistently Disappoint

    By Joe Cermele

I snagged this photo, and the idea for this post, from the Australia-based "Fishing World Blog." There are millions of lure articles out there, but I've never read one like author Sami Omari's, which discusses lures that ain't worth a lick. In the post, Omari talks about a box of lures "hidden away in a dark corner or a storage compartment somewhere on my boat...lures that are rarely swum and cursed at every sighting." I had to laugh at this because I can totally relate. We all have those lures or flies that we really want to work...but they just don't.

Merwin: Martinis, Rapalas, and Early Fall

    By John Merwin

So last week I took my own advice (see “The Last Day” in our September print edition) and went to the West Branch of the Ausable in northern New York for some fall trout fishing. The fishing was excellent. The catching somewhat less so.

Cermele: Grab a Marker, This Needs Some Color

    By Joe Cermele

Not long ago, I posted about an Oregon lure designer customizing Kwikfish with some killer (and productive) paint jobs. I hinted that adding subtle touches to your own lures isn't a bad idea. Then lo and behold, a good buddy sends me info on the lure below made by Hawaii-based Pili. The bodies are made of an absorbent urethane--kind of like skateboard wheels--and soak in the color from permanent markers, making your custom pattern, well, permanent. My question is, do you see this as a useful angling tool, or kid's art project?

Cermele: Remember That Goldfish You Flushed?

    By Joe Cermele

Well, he didn't die and he's really, really upset with you. In fact, he was just biding his time, packing on pounds and waiting for you to wade into the local lake near the sewage plant. His goal was to make you wade out with a few less toes or maybe minus a foot. But lucky for you, he's been caught, so breathe easy.

Cermele: Using Catfish to Catch Smallmouth?

    By Joe Cermele

Like Mr. Merwin, who just posted about some exceptional fishing in New York, I have been on a severe smallmouth kick lately. My home water, the Delaware River, has sprung to life in the last two weeks. Shad and herring fry are pushing downstream, and suddenly the big bass have lost their summer sluggishness. But it turns out fry are not the only thing these smallies are chowing on. I pulled this baby catfish from a bass's gullet this Sunday, and it's rather ironic because of something that happened just last week.
