Petzal: Testing Nosler’s New Lead-Free Ballistic Tips for Varmints

Petzal: Testing Nosler’s New Lead-Free Ballistic Tips for Varmints

One the one hand, I don’t give an assfull of ashes for the idea that shooting lead-free bullets will do the planet one iota of good. We get lead from the ground and we return it to the ground, albeit at very high speeds, so BFD. On the other hand, mandated lead-free zones have given us some dandy new homogeneous bullets by Hornady, Nosler, and Barnes, so it’s not a total waste.

The most recent of this genre is from Nosler—a lead-free Ballistic Tip for varmint hunters. The batch I tested is .224-inch and 35 grains, but there will be lighter and heavier slugs out shortly. These new Ballistic Tips are made with a disintegrating copper core, an alloy jacket, an extra-large expansion cavity in the nose, and an attractive polycarbonate tip.

To test them, I fired ...... a batch in my supernaturally accurate .223 Savage Model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter Dual Port (try saying that in one breath). I found that, with the same powder charges I used for 50-grain Ballistic Tips, I could get 3,600 fps as opposed to 3,400 fps. Accuracy was not as good as with the conventional Ballistic Tips, although the average was a half-inch, and I got some groups quite a bit smaller. The Model 12 Etcetera has a 1-9 twist, and I suspect that is a bit fast for these short, light, bullets; I think I might have done much better with 1-12 or 1-14.

Are the Lead-Frees frangible? Rest easy. They frange just fine. Small rodents being in short supply, I shot apples, and they disintegrated in a cloud of apple juice. You can read more about the new BTs at nosler.com. Buy lots and save the environment.

I have already developed a preference for Barnes X-Bullets, the Tipped TSX and TSX in particular. They shoot very well in my .30-06 and 7mm Wby Mag and I am able to step down one bullet weight and increase velocity and reduce recoil a little. I don't think a 165 gr penetrates much less than a 180 gr; nor a 150 gr much less than a 160 gr in the same design projectile for a given caliber.

For my other rifles, conventional bullets will probably remain the projectile du jour.

I want to try some of the highly frangible .308's on some song dogs! Just for the environment's sake, of course.

I can't say either way whether the amount of lead used in varmint shooting does or doesn't have any sort of environmental impact. However, I hope you meant your statement "We get lead from the ground and we return it to the ground, albeit at very high speeds, so BFD." in jest.

Yes, lead comes from the ground. We also get petroleum from the ground; that doesn't mean it is in any way okay for to pour your used motor oil on your front lawn after an oil change. If you disagree with me, I recommend you try it for awhile and see how it works out...

well, i have to agree with you about lead really not being a prolem. it is a politiacal hot topic so it gets lots of attention. i suppose, in the right enviroment, and exposed in the right way, then yes, it is poisonous. but so are many, many other things and we get along just fine with them. the big problem is that so called "experts" have convinced nim-whitted polaticians that it is the poison to end all poisons, and it is being thrown around all over the world like childrens marbles. am i careful around it when i am melting it? yes. do i limit my childrens exposure to it? yes. but that is about the extent of what needs to be done to protect us from this evil concoction. the morons out in kalifonia will believe anything. and pass laws against any percieved threat, real or imagined. what they really do not realize, is that every law, is a restriction on peoples freedoms. our government wants to do nothing more than take away as many of our freedoms as possible, so they can "control" us. pretty soon, we will all be without much in the way of any personal freedoms. i can not believe that people in general can not see where this is all headed. as for solid alloy bullets without lead, i have nothing against them. we have been using them in dangerous game for years, and i see no problem with them, except for the price tag. would i skimp on a bullet saving me from a rihno or lion, NO STINKING WAY! but, would i pay a bunch of extra coin to blow away rodents, NOT LIKELY! in the pursuit of hunting north american big game, i really do not see the need, but if one bullet was proven to be far superior to any other lead cored bullet, and the price was reasonable, then yes, i would use it. but, at this point, the old tried and true lead cored hunting bullets are pretty hard to beat.

I know that seeing lead free bullets with an inflated price tag has been the norm for a while now, and most of us have had the choice not to buy them. Fair enough, but what happens when you have to buy them? What happens when you aren't offered a choice?

That's the question that we were faced with as a manufacturer by thousands of loyal customers when California passed legislation banning lead in condor regions of the state. As a responsible company with a strong following, it was our responsibility to give our customer (and maybe some new customers) a choice. Bob Nosler made it very clear that not only should these bullets adhere to the strict standards as our other products but they should also be affordable. Why should responsible hunters be punished simply because they followed the law?

That's exactly why our Ballistic Tip Lead Free bullets that Dave tested are the exact same price as our standard Ballistic Tip bullets and our E-Tip bullets for big game are slightly less than our Partition bullets.

I got about 75 lbs of lead laying around, if they want it they can have it about 220 grains at a time.

I look at it like Dave, it came out of the ground and for the most part it is getting put back in the ground, isn't that perfect re-cycling?

MLH, the varmint didn't die of "copper poisoning", it was a severe allergic reaction to copper that it was suddenly exposed to. What can you do?

The new revenew generated by these over expensisive rounds will improve sales and generate cash for the government to spend on more silly things to do to Americans.
