Conservation Roundup: Senate Amendment Threatens Waterfowlers and Anglers
by Bob Marshall
There's been little for sportsmen to thank Congress for lately, what with our public servants taking a $615 million bite out of conservation programs just last week in the name--falsely--of cutting the nation's deficit.
So news that Senators John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) and Dean Heller (R-Nevada) want to permanently remove protection from 20 million acres of critical wetlands is even more egregious. This is the latest attempt to prevent Congress from addressing Supreme Court rulings in 2001 and 2006 that said the original Clean Water Act was not meant to protect "isolated and temporary wetlands." Unfortunately for sportsmen, it meant one-fifth of the nation's wetlands and as many as 2,000,000 miles of small streams would now be open to draining and development. These just happen to be among the most critical to waterfowl, including the prairie pothole region where most North American ducks are raised.
Sportsmen immediately supported bills to reinstate those protections under the Clean Water Restoration Act, but an avalanche of lobbying from developers and some agricultural businesses prevented passage.
The day seemed to be saved earlier this year when the Obama Administration provided a patch by issuing a new guidance to federal agencies on which wetlands could be protected. But opponents--primarily agribusinesses and land developers--fought back. They've been shouting to conservatives that "liberals" are attempting to "expand" protections of the Clean Water Act, when all conservationists are attempting to do is restore what had been in place for 30 years.
The Barrasso-Heller offering sent shock waves across the sportsmen's conservation community last week, because the wetlands left unprotected are vital to waterfowl, as well as fish and innumerable other wildlife.
"Clean water is the foundation on which enjoyable and productive hunting and angling trips are built," said Steve Kline of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, which includes almost every sportsman's conservation organization.
"We can create jobs without draining wetlands and polluting streams...Now we must act as advocates for the conservation of our nation's waters and wetlands until these irreplaceable resources are appropriately managed and conserved."

I'm done DONE with the Republican Party. They've become a bunch of corporate goons and let these pea-brain Tea Party extremists take over. Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry is the best they got? This is insanity.
Ronald Reagan: "Many laws protecting environmental quality have promoted liberty by securing property against the destructive trespass of pollution. In our own time, the nearly universal appreciation of these preserved landscapes, restored waters, and cleaner air through outdoor recreation is a modern expression of our freedom and leisure to enjoy the wonderful life that generations past have built for us."
Barry Goldwater: "While I am a great believer in the free enterprise system and all that it entails, I am an even stronger believer in the right our people to live in a clean and pollution-free environment."
Dwight Eisenhower: "As we peer into society's future, we - you and I, and our government - must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage."
Why do we have to choose between our freedom ( most democrats wanna take), and this great land we were blessed with (most republicans wanna destroy). There should be an enviromental amendment to the constitution protecting our air, land, and water. No one should be allowed to destroy and pollute the air, land, and water for there own gain.
WOW, who would have thought that these two Senators would have an (R) next to their name.
First of all, what's with all the SPAMMERS? Second of all, what's with our legislatures (on both sides) giving into their political lobbyists? Do any of them have a spine in their body? I have many close relatives who are farmers (who are also republicans) so I really can see both sides here. I'm an avid outdoorsman, and while there is a need to balance the budget, and stop spending more than what we are bring in, I want to see my children and grandchildren enjoy the outdoors as much as I do today. Is there a solution? Will these groups ever see eye to eye? I'm not sure they will.
I agree with everyone here (except the overseas spammers) and I am strongly thinking of re-registering as an independent. The Republicans (and the Democrats) seem to have sold their soul to the highest bidder and think we are stupid enough to listen to the false issues and tripe that they put out so we donut focus on the weasels and their lobbyist stealing our environment, our savings, our companies and our pensions. Anyone with any courage and integrity is gunned down in the press true or not, so all it is left is liars and idiots. RealGoodMan: I could not agree with you more. The only bastion we have against these crooks is congress and those bastards sold out to the highest bidder. Teddy (Roosevelt) we need you now more than ever.
SPEAKING OF CROOKS and SPAMMERS: I spent a lot of time overseas in the last 20 years and exact American english syntax is kind of hard to emulate for those not born here. I am strongly betting, these spammers are overseas and NOT a reputable company, or are selling bad knock offs. If you click on their links make damn sure you have a GREAT VIRUS checker.
