busy day for deer...
Indiana sets record deer harvest - I'll tell you this; I hunted in Kansas for years and had to adjust my techniques and methods for the Indiana hunting when I moved here; lot of deer to pick from but getting a 'good one' is still a hunter's challenge!
Will be interesting to see what happens in Wisconsin over the next couple of years, not just in hunter success but also in disease containment.
Everyone should have known that baiting was illegal in Michigan's lower peninsula but this was the first time I heard that jail time was mandatory for killing a deer over bait. Strange twist that an ex-DNR official was jailed for this.
WI hopefully gets their head on straight. I remember days when I couldn't keep count of the deer I saw, now I have to count the deer if I see any. I know things change but not something I like to say. Away with EAB please! JMO
On Pennsylvania: saying the deer population decreased from 1.4 to 1 million doesn't do that statistic justice. From first-hand experience, some areas have seen dramatic depletion of numbers while other remain about the same as they were before the new management practices.
10-15 years ago, on the mountain where I learned to hunt, it was commonplace for one guy to see 50 to 75 deer on the first day of rifle season. Last report from what's left of our crew: 4 guys, six full days, dark to dark, 2 deer. TWO.
In the north central part of the state, you'll hear these reports from virtually every camp. The Game Commission says deer numbers haven't dropped that much. I say they should spend more time out of the office talking to hunters and learn how their plan is affecting specific regions as well as the state as a whole.
Dave...You gonna make us wait all day for the Scoring results?
Whackdaddy. I hunt the northcentral region. 2g. While deer numbers are definetly down, we see and shoot as many bucks as ever, and better ones generally. Yes, it's great to see lot's of deer. 75 in a day seems like a lot to ask. Two in a season is abysmal. I think the two week doe season is the culprit and the new doe season (7 days?) is more reasonable. This year in 4 days i saw about 13 deer while hunting, which i consider a bit light but not terrible. No bucks was disappointing and not the norm of late. Hope next year is better! These rainy Openers should lend towards more deer next year, you'd think.
I hunt in western indiana. Between the two of us that hunt together we took three does and a buck out of the woods. I also believe it or not stuck two does with one arrow. We searched for over 9 hours on them. Couldnt find them. I also saw over 20 deer in a field at the same time and if it wasnt for a bad cap in my omega i would of had a nice 8 pointer. All together we saw over 50 deer this year and we had an outstanding year. Indiana will soon be putting out record bucks because i saw two that were easy 160 class and one was the absolute biggest ive ever seen out of the treestand just no clear shot and no point on wounding a monster
The study commissioned by the Pa Legislature was awarded to a business which is being run by two past Pa Game Commission executives. So much for impartiality! The deer management program in Pa is decimating the deer herd!
