10-Foot Python Still on the Loose in WI Navarino Wildlife Area

By Chad Love

Is Wisconsin the new south Florida? It appears that way after a 10-foot python was recently spotted slithering across a road in the land of cheese.

From this story on fox11online.com:

Officials in the Navarino Wildlife Area say it's like finding a needle in a haystack. A ten-foot python snake is on the loose in the Shawano County reserve that covers 15,000 acres. The snake was spotted over Memorial Day weekend, and crews and volunteers have been searching for it ever since.

Despite several coordinated searches, the snake has not been found. Although officials say it's almost certainly just an escaped or released pet, and that the snake may very well have succumbed to chilly night temperatures, the fact remains that a giant snake is out there, roaming the wilds of Wisconsin. If it ever learns how to knit itself a little snake bootie to keep warm, we're doomed.

wisconsin gets pretty cold, I'm sure it won't last long out there. Pretty cool though!

You'd be surprised what animals can endure. It probably knows enough to go down in a hole when the weather gets too cold. If it finds a good place to hibernate this winter it will be out and about again come spring. Snakes don't die just because the weather gets a bit cold. They wait it out.

That photo was taken 7 miles east of my house. I hope it makes it. People are nuts who raise something like that then let it go in this part of the country. Although we have had some pretty mild winters the last couple years. Good luck snake.

What a gorgeous animal!! It looks like a carpet python color morph, but with all this designer reptile stuff, things can get a little convoluted. If that is a carpet python, they don't hibernate so it will die by the time winter comes. The likelihood a python of any species would survive a WI winter is extremely unlikely. Though a constrictor 9ft or longer is large enough to kill a human, you would have a better chance of getting struck by lighting. Pythons do not view humans as prey. Don't let silly internet email forward hoaxes fool you. Most instances of pythons killing humans is in captive situations with bad husbandry practices; IE, people letting the snake roam the house, thinking they only need to feed once a month or handling the animal after handling a prey animal (rat, cat, dog, chicken).
So, Sayfu, don't worry too much and miss out on some summer fun. You don't have much to worry about from one python. There are much more scary things out there like other drivers to be concerned about.

If a bear or a wolfpack doesn't get him, winter surely will.

If they need it dispatched, the most economical way would be to put a small bounty on it. If that happened there probably would be some shotgun totin anglers fishing there. Problem solved.
