Canadian Bear Put Down After Attacking Man in Hot Tub
By Chad Love
Getting attacked by a bear while walking through the woods is understandable. Unfortunate, but understandable. But getting attacked by a bear while minding your own business soaking in your hot tub? Bad luck, bad karma or just a bad coincidence, that's exactly what happened recently to this poor soul.
From this story in the Vancouver Sun:
Conservation officers are trying to figure out why a black bear would swat a man relaxing in a Whistler hot tub and then pace outside the patio window after his victim fled to safety inside.
The man, a 55-year-old from Coquitlam, was alone in the hot tub with his back to the forest when he was hit in the back of the head and was pitched forward into the tub. When he looked up he was face-to-face with a mature male bear, according to the RCMP.
The man yelled and ran inside the condo in the 4800-block of Casabella Crescent. But the bear, rather than running away, lingered, and paced outside the window for a few minutes until police arrived, said conservation officer Chris Doyle.
According to the story, the bear was found a short distance from the house and killed. The man was taken to a local hospital and treated for three cuts to his head. Authorities have no idea why the bear attacked the man, but interestingly, the story says bears are sometimes attracted to hot tub covers because they apparently smell like ant dens? Weird. So I guess the moral of the story is, when you soak in a hot tub in bear country, it might be a good idea to invest in a...hot tub bear gun?
