Video: Cameraman Has Close Encounter with Hungry Polar Bear
By Chad Love
A Scottish wildlife cameraman filming polar bears in Norway had a face-to-face encounter with one who tried to break through his safety pod. So if you've ever had the desire to experience what it's like to be a seal in the last moments of its life, but without actually being eaten and digested, then here's a video for you.
From this story in the New York Daily News:
A polar bear chomped her sharp teeth against the protective pod of a wildlife cameraman, who kept his composure as he filmed the horrific encounter, despite being terrified.
Scottish cameraman Gordon Buchanan was filming polar bears throughout the northernmost part of Norway, Svalbard, which is an Arctic archipelago. His team constructed a safety pod, so he could get as close possible to the largest carnivore on earth without turning into lunch.
Obviously the cameraman survived, so I guess that dinky little "pod" is bear-proof, but I'm not convinced that bear was really trying very hard. Either way, I don't think I'd take my chances with a polar bear while sitting inside an over-sized Christmas ornament. Would you?

The bear looked to be more curious than really hungry, kinda like digging through the fridge when you're bored.
Is anyone else here reminded of Quint's comments in Jaws, where Hooper is loading the shark cage on the boat?
"Cage goes in the water. You go in the water. Shark's in the water. Our shark. Farewell and adieu, to you, fair Spanish ladies..."
I'm all for adventure and cool photos, but I'll take my polar bears on TV, thank you very much.
I will take my polar bears on tv too, soooo, Thanks guy, great footage. Would have loved to see a couple of really pissed off swipes and snarls though. The bear may have not been able to get in, but it probably could have knocked it over and rolled it for a mile.
These bear nuts are all the same. Saw so much of this phony crap in Alaska. "I learn so much ... sitting in this bullet proof crate letting some semi-domesticated bear play with it." Pffffffft! Get thyself to the zoo and quit screwing with the natural environment.
This reminds me of the toys I give my Pit Bull to play with, you know, the ones with a treat inside!
It sure makes your .44 Magnum look small. But, she would make beautiful rug !
@ ontario honker: I agree with your other points but if you know anything about polar bears you know that aint semi-domesticated or even close to it. especially in norway were the polar bears overthere live in some decently remote stuff.
so cool
