Bird Cam: Peregrine Falcon Dives and Snatches Duck From Lake

By CJ Lotz

When you strap a camera to the back of a Peregrine falcon, the view is going to be awesome, but this video captured something even better—the falcon on the hunt. About a minute in, the falcon stoops on an unsuspecting duck. It's a perspective humans have never seen before...

Wow, new meaning to death from above! Guess the Falconer didn't like duck, let the Peregrin chow down.

My cousin is a licensed falconer and he had a few birds of prey. The peregrine falcon was his favorite because they were the fastest. He hunted pigeons with his peregrine falcon. My cousin said pigeons so were easy for his peregrine falcon; it was like taking candy from a baby.

Peregrines are great birds. I studied them for the Canadian Wildlife Service in the 1970's along the Mackenzie River. Their recovery has been amazing. Today peregrines can be found all around the country in urban areas as well as in their traditional cliff habitats. I saw a pair in Rochester Mn when I visited the Mayo clinic for a cancer consultation. That was the high point of my prostate cancer experience. Three weeks ago I saw a peregrine in Syracuse NY as I was recovering from heart surgery. Keep your eyes open.

Amazing! Wonder how many 'G''s this dive would have measured?

That's incredible. I saw a Falconer and his bird hunting rabbits once and witnessed the bird take a rabbit but to see the hunt from this angle is incredible, the speed and precision is jaw dropping.

A few feathers were ruffled from take-off, a bit of a bumpy ride, but the landing was superb!
The duck would have faired better if it would have "ducked" and went below the surface.
