Texas Turkey Hunters: How Bad Was Your Season?

By CJ Lotz

Turkey season just closed in drought-stricken Texas and the state's Wildlife Department is predicting 60 percent fewer mature males were tagged this year than before the drought hit in 2010.

Any firsthand reports from those of you who hunt gobblers in The Lone Star State?

Down here in the southwest corner of the Hill Country, there were a ton of birds, but it did seem like the breeding activity was very limited. Nevertheless, I was able to call in one mature tom and a handful of jakes. I didn't shoot any of them because I was basically calling from my barn, and it just didn't seem right. Besides, I've still got a bird in the freezer from the fall season. Don't need more meat.

Hunted Edwards Co. Just south of Rocksprings. I shot 1 Tom that is being verified as an Edwards Co.record with NWTF Rough scored a 73. Last spring we had a very good pult turnout which I think accounted for jakes and toms taken last fall. Last spring I got a very large tom(22lbs) with only 1/2" spurs; I think that was draught related.

We hunt Throckmorton County and saw lots of hens & jakes
but few mature gobblers. I shot a jake on my last hunt mainly because there were eight in front of me at one time and I had not shot a turkey in two years. The next couple of years should be goof for mature birds.

TX, you must hunt near me. I'm in Camp Wood. There are a bunch of birds around here, including some huge toms. A saw good numbers of poults last year, but I haven't seen anything this spring. We just (today) got hammered with rain, and there's standing water on every flat spot... as badly as we've needed this downpour, all that standing water doesn't bode well for poult survival.
