Video: Black Bear Climbs Tree to Give Hunter a Sniff

By Ben Romans

It’s no secret that a bear’s sense of smell is one of its greatest assets. But combining that with its sense of curiosity can sometimes make for a tense situation. That’s what one hunter recently discovered while sitting in a treestand overlooking a bait pile.

Kudos to the inidentified bowhunter for staying so calm (and holding his camera so steady). As you can imagine, the hunter was a bit shaken after the bear climbed down and wandered off. Be sure to watch it all the way to the end.

Hi...

Good video.

But why didn't the hunter take the bear...??

That was dangerously to close. The bear could bite him or scratch him at that range. Bears are strong and one swipe could of knock mr. bow hunter down to the ground.

I think my bladder would might have emptied itself during that encounter.

Holy Bear Close!!! When I saw the headline I imagined a bear climbing halfway up the tree under the stand, not eye to eye with the camera. If that's truly a wild bear, I would have made a lot of noise as soon as the bear started climbing the tree. Either way, very cool video.

That guy has ice water in his veins. What a cool video and your're dead right. I cannot imagine how he held the camera steady.
@ Pathfinder, at the end of the video you see another smaller bear on the bait which means that was likely a sow with a cub. Probably why he didn't try to take that bear. Or he couldn't stand up. Or both.

Likely he needed fresh underwear. He was lucky the bear did not have a human tag.

Great video, very risky.
The hunter was lucky, he must have had the wrong 'scent' for the bear.
