Survive the Zombie Deer Apocalypse in this Bunker

By Phil Bourjaily

Photos by Atlas Survival Shelters

Because the zombie-deer apocalypse is nigh, everyone needs an underground deer shack. Atlas Survival Shelters of Montebello, Calif., will build you one made out of a shipping container or corrugated pipe. The one pictured above, is decorated in a deer-hunting theme and doubles as a hunting camp bunkhouse. This particular corrugated pipe model is 10 feet by 51 feet and costs somewhere in the mid-70s uninstalled.

The shelter comes with a master bedroom, bunks, kitchen, bath, entertainment center/living room, mud room, and other amenities, as well as a concealed escape hatch in case you need to outflank the undead whitetails pawing at the entry. Altas can bury these up to 42 feet underground and says they will last 200 years. Atlas shelters have appeared on several TV outlets, including the Travel Channel.

Do you need one? Probably. In the words of Dr. Johnny Fever, “When everyone is out to get you, paranoia is just good thinking.”

holly claustrophobia! lol although with the direction the world is going in, an under ground bunker might not be such a bad idea! :/

I think the 70k is government pricing. ;)

Air? Need a shaft and need air pumps. You will need water source and a way to run off sewage to a septic. (An attached outhouse underground? gag-gag-barf-barf). All the food and shelter in the world mean nothing if you can’t get clean air.

Here is an related Zombie question. If Zombies are the undead, what does that make vampires? Are they related? Like cousins or something?

Rocky, I find that the term "undead" is inaccurate regarding vampires, since the person who becomes one was never dead in the first place. If you've died, you can never be a vampire; a vampire can't bring you back to life and then turn you into one. He or she has to bite you when you're still living. Zombies are corpses come back to life, so the term "undead" should be theirs and theirs alone.

Wow. It's really turning into a long winter, isn't it?

RockySquirrel -- they've got the air shafts and pumps and sewage all figured out. Check the website. I don't want one of these for survival but if you buried one about 3/4 of the way into the ground and put a cover on top you'd have a great goose pit.

Acutally, a vampire bite does kill you and then makes you reborn as a vampire. Didn't anyone else here waste away their childhool playing Dungeons and Dragons?

No, the vamp's bite doesn't kill you. Often, they feed on victims several times before the transformation occurs. Meanwhile, the victims go on with their lives, only they wonder why they feel tired all the time and why their skin is getting pasty. Dungeons and Dragons is no kind of resource. Read DRACULA and SALEM's LOT, and watch HBO's "True Blood."
