Montana Hunter Tags State’s First Wolf
By Dave Hurteau
From the Great Falls Tribune:
A Roberts hunter killed the first wolf under Montana's new backcountry wolf hunting season, which opened Tuesday.
Hunter Perry Zumwalt called Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials Wednesday morning from the remote Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area to report that he shot a wolf. . . .
FWP officials said Zumwalt reported killing his wolf shortly before noon.
Aasheim said information was limited, adding he did not know the gender of the wolf.

I heard about this yesterday. One of the many that are going to go!
good for him. glad to see that when the seasons are open the hunters can do their part.
as a MT sportsman, i am very proud of Mr. Z. all i can add is happy hunting to everyone who purchased a MT wolf tag.
murderers! is all i have to say.
With any luck at all perhaps the honorable Mr. Zumwalt might have capped one of the wolves that strayed across the border from Wyoming. I can only hope so. Congrats to you Mr. Z. and may your hunting companions become equally successful in short order.
CONGATS!!!! TO YOU MR,ZUMWALT.
Congratulations Mr. Zumwalt! Thank you for helping manage the wolf population which will contribute to a healthy environment for all species. Job well done!

Go out and live near and among packs of these creatures and you'll find that they are not so very cuddly and adorable. Foolish children.
Congrats to him, I hope the antis leave him alone....we tried for elk and wolves for 3 days, no luck...hot weather, and a lot of empty wildlife habitat...elk trails grown over from lack of use...a sad sight in parts of unit 12......
Wolf lover
Grow a pair you qu33r!!
congrats hope he has an easier path than idahooutdoors
Well done, one more down and counting...
I don't doubt that idahooutdoors and Mr. Z are a good people and hunters with great skills and they have the right to their opinion. I am a hunter, however, I can not condone the killing of wolves or any animal that is not numerous. A few hundred wolves living in a small area of the north west is not an animal that should be hunted. Especially with all the tax payer money/energy being spent on trying to bring the wolf back. As far as the claim that wolves are killing too many other game animals, I can't agree. The biggest killer of elk, deer, etc.. are hunters and Winter weather. One must realize why some hunters would like to hunt wolves - it is the challenge of killing an apex predator. Here is a challenge: hunt elk (or deer) in the back country with bow and arrow. Hunting like this is not only challenging but one can experience the trill of hunting more on natures terms. After all, isn't that what hunting is supposed to be. The focus being on the experience and not all the importance being put on the kill.
Lastly, I don't know idahooutdoors or Mr. Z, however, calling them a coward or murderer is wrong and childish. However, killing wolves (although legal at this time) is wrong as stated in my last note. On the other hand, another misguided comment was that wolf numbers have "exploded". Are there thousands of wolves out there or something? No, there is a small number of wolves trying to make a come back. The only population that has been growing is the human population creating urban sprawl and destoying the environment. I can't understand these posts of people who seem to be so happy a wolf was killed. Like the wolf personally insulted them or something (this is also childish) and they are glad it is dead. Finally, I will state one last time I am a hunter but only of numerous animals (deer, Elk, several different types of Fowl - and if Elk numbers decrease in a certain area maybe Elk hunting needs to be curtailed in that area for a time). And (by far) hunters kill the most game NOT the "big bad wolf". We need to have hunting represent more of a respect for nature not just shoot everything we can. I have been around many hunters all my life I know how they (we) think.
Great Trophy!
Julia G-- I respect your opinion, although I feel the State Biologists know exactly what they're talking about. If they feel management is needed to keep the population in check, then so be it.
i would love to live among wolves but i have other things to do, ans as for the other idoit telling me to grow some, im female retard and omg you guys are all going to say that explains it all, idc all i know is what your doing is not right, and there are alot of hurt feelings with animal and wolf lovers.
Wolf_lover,
I've plagerized a reponse written by our own Idahooutdoors that I thought you should read. It's his response to the questions "do fish feel pain".
The world is a tough place, it's just the way it is, we didn't create it, we just share it...and we can not change the tree of life no matter how enlightened some people feel they have become...I would never harm an animal just to inflict pain, but I love to fish, and love to hunt, and accept the results of my actions....a fish feels no more pain from my hook than when it is eaten by another bigger fish, and a deer dies no more painfully from my bullet than the teeth of a predator...people are not immune from the tree of life, but are part of it....and some of us prefer the role of predator over that of prey...
This is just a small bit of how us outdoorsman feel. We are not asking you to kill a wolf or agree with us in anyway but just accept the fact that you and I are two different people. I hunt for many reason and feel I owe no one an explaination. Despite our difference we have much in common. First and foremost, we both love, respect and appreciate wolves. Shooting a wolf is among many other things, a great honor. We respect the cunning and skill of the wolf as a vicious predator but there comes a time when this predator can get out of control and threaten other game species. We do not take lightly our task as stewards. We are simplly balancing nature.
thank you for sharing, and i do understand we are two different people, and believe different things, but i do understand a little better on what you are talking about and how you guys feel, thank you again.
Ms Wolf lover
I am sorry to confuse you with a man. I however am not sorry for any insult that I have or may throw your way. You call my kind of people a murderer and I call you what I wish. You call me an idiot I feel the need to tell you that you started calling the names, and you need to get off your high horse your riding. I know you are the naive type of person that would vote in such a way that we have idiots ruining everything that the USA is. I don't care what your opinion is and never will. You can do your so called good deed for nature by calling hunters killers if that is what makes you feel good. I actually try to help out wildlife by managing them and providing cover and strips of crops left in the field for them to eat in the winter. Have a nice day, and remember to turn your headlights on bright because you seem a bit dim.
look who's talking about high horse, you'd shoot that too wouldn't you? and I'm not naive and wouldn't vote for an idiot to run the US, i still do live here, Plus my fiance is going to Iraq in a week, like i want an idiot in charge of that. and i don't consider it a good deed, i just believe its wrong, and again, who says you have to manage it, yes its good your leaving animals food, but that don't mean you have to manage them. and i don't care what you call me because i don't care, that stuff don't get to me, sorry to burst your bubble.
