Florida Men Catch 1,264 Panfish—About 800 Over The Limit
By Dave Hurteau
From Tampa’s 10 News:
Four fishermen from South Carolina had a very unlucky Friday the 13th. That's when a state wildlife officer seized their catch [of over 1,000 fish, mostly shellcrackers] and charged them with going over their limit. . . .
Each angler is allowed just 50 fish per day, with a maximum of a two days' catch in possession.
If convicted, the fishermen face fines of up to $500 and 60 days in jail.

That is pretty ridiculous! I mean that is a lot of fish and even though it is bad, fishing that good, I am not sure if I would want to stop either.
Nobody said they had to stop fishing, they could fish all day and continue to catch them as long as they throw them back. These people just got greedy and were finally caught. If everyone just kept everything and shot everything just becauses the fishing or hunting was good, their would be nothing left to fish or hunt. To me, this is the same as stealing and should be punished accordingly.
I wonder how long would it take to even clean 1,264 fish? That seems like it would be an all day activity for 4 fishermen.
I think the fine was way too lenient.
I don't understand why people can't play by the rules, unless their judgement was somehow clouded!
And I bet they will get off light!
Didn't read anything about dynamite. These guys should sell their secret bait.
i think that it is very wrong that people keep that many fish and only get fined 500 dollars. its just awful, they probably cleared out a lot of that water area. Stuff like that really ticks me off.
I've caught 1 per cast when they are bedding in north FL on a fly rod with a popping bug. You can catch them on cane poles with worms too in ridiculous numbers. I've seen dufuses with buckets and 3 inch fish in them. What a bunch of morons. This is why the fishing sucks in some areas. They should charge them 100 dollars per fish over the limit.
The jailtime would be a much bigger deal than the paltry fine.
Shellcrackers should be spawning next month in Central Florida IMS. I would love to fly home to Lake County for some 'cracker fishing. Pound for pound nothing pulls any harder than a Shellcracker. We always caught them on red worms when I was a kid. Good eating too.
They shouldn't be able to fish for life. it's people like them that give all of us a bad name and if they are going to blatantly ignore the rules they shouldn't be able to have the right to fish again. Rules are clearly stated in all DNR handbooks and the handbooks are available where ever licenses are sold. People need to know that if they break the rules they are going to get more than a slap on the wrist.
