    Merwin: Lucky vs. Good

    By John Merwin

When it comes to fishing, is it better to be lucky or to be good?

That’s an age-old question, of course, but worth talking about once in a while.

Was Giant Japanese Bass Caught Off Limits?

    By Lance Madden

We knew it was going to take quite a long time to verify whether Manabu Kurita had indeed landed the world record bass at the beginning of this month, but questions keep coming up, each one making it harder for Kurita to take sole possession of the record.

    In Memory of William Tapply

    By Dave Hurteau

In my first couple years with F&S, I edited a handful of articles by Bill Tapply. I didn’t know him as the literary force he was. The English professor and author of more than 40 books, including two dozen mystery novels, never let on to any of that in our few phone conversations. His writing was clean and tight—not much to discuss there. So we talked grouse hunting and flyfishing. I didn’t think anything of it. Having no clue of his stature, I saw no reason why he shouldn’t speak to a perfectly green editor as a friend and an equal.

A Fishing Outfit for Tough Economic Times

    By Tim Romano

Every once and a while the guys over at Moldychum.com have a blog post so brilliant I have to steal it and post for the Flytalk nation to read. Granted they found this great idea over at instructables.com first on how to build this little pocket rod and reel out of everyday items you could find in your garage. If you've got a pen, some washers, wire, bolts, nuts, a nail, glue, old car antenna, fishing line, swivel, and a hook you're in business. Follow this...

Discussion Topic: Should Maryland Ban Summer Tidal-Water Bass Tournaments?

    By Dave Hurteau

Local Maryland bass anglers are livid after an FLW Stren Series bass tournament apparently left more than 600 bass floating dead along a six-mile area of the Mattawoman Creek and Potomac River, believed to be victims of delayed mortality after being released alive. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources concedes that even more dead bass may have been carried away on the tide, and the agency has now instituted several new rules to govern tournaments.

What Makes Guides Great? (And the Grudge Match Scoreboard)

Anyone who knows me personally understands that I think the sun rises and sets in the fly fishing world where guides say it does.  I've always been a fan of guides; I guide myself; how could I not be a fan?

I know, I know... it's expensive to go on a guide trip.  But in my experience, if you find the right guide, the investment is ultimately as valuable in your long term fishing experience as almost anything you can buy, save the rod and reel itself.  Put it this way... if the investment is not extremely valuable in this way, well, you went fishing with the wrong guide.

I think that's especially true in fly fishing.  Too many "gurus" approach this sport as a platform to show all the stuff they know that we do not, and maybe make a buck or too in the process.  The guide's mission should be exactly the opposite... to break down the barriers, to share understanding, and to instill confidence that this crazy sport isn't rocket science after all.

Merwin: Thoughts from a Lure Buyer

    By John Merwin

So I’d like to introduce you guys to my pal Tony the Lure Man. That happy-looking young fellow in the photo is Tony Witte, whose job it is to buy fishing lures for Cabela’s. All those great-looking lures you see in the catalogs at one time or another first had to pass muster with Tony. We were bass fishing together down Florida way a while back, where I tried picking the padlock on all those wonderful trade secrets he most certainly knows.

Tony is a very nice guy and, when it comes to corporate operations, also extremely circumspect. I’d ask him some penetrating journalist-type question. He’d grin at me and shake his head, not saying a word. But he did finally tell me a couple of things that I thought were interesting ...

Discussion Topic: On Same-Sex Couples and Catfish Derbies

    By Dave Hurteau

I’m not touching this one, except to say that this is bound to lead to a constitutional amendment defining the meaning of the term “couple” so that folks can run catfish derbies without confusion.

    Cermele: Light It Up

    By Joe Cermele

That's me in the photo below fighting a seatrout with a five-weight fly rod on the dock of Getaway Adventure Lodge here in Port Mansfield, Texas. It happens to be my home away from home this week. Photographer Bill Honza snapped the (awesome) shot last night in the eerie green glow cast by the bait-attracting dock lights.

    Merwin: Camo Rods?

    By John Merwin

Do we really need camo-pattern fishing rods? I was wondering that this morning while noting that the “best new rod” category at the recent ICAST fishing-trade show was won by a new rod series decked out in a variety of camouflage finishes. It just struck me that making a rod less visible is going to make me more likely to step on it or to shut the rod tip in a car door.
