Tarpon & The Florida Citrus Queen

By Tim Romano

A little blast from the past compliments of the IGFA Museum's library and Costa Del Mar. Stu Apte, one of the great fly fisherman of all time shows us and and an interested "citrus queen" how to land giant tarpon of a time gone by on a fly rod.

The supposed point of the films, dug up by the IGFA is to remind people how fishing shows were in "simpler times". What do you say?  Do you prefer the technique, equipment, location, and sponsorship formats of shows today drilled into your skulls or would you rather watch something like the piece below?

Enjoy, TR

Thanks TR, I grew up watching "American Sportsman" with guys like Kurt Gowdy(spelling ?), Fred Bear, and Jim Corbett, and Stu . Thanks for bringing a tear to an "old" mans eye for the bygone days. Please keep up the good work!

I also grew up watching the American Sportsman, and all the excellent episodes of Michigan Outdoors with Mort Neff in the late 60's and early 70's. Todays shows are to commercialized and extreamly set up. Most hunting shows are filmed on ranches -aka high fence farms- If you look for it you can see the fences in most of them. The old shows were shot in wide open country and their stars were True Sportsman, not trophy hunters, Sportsman.

You gotta love the old films. Somethings you just don't see anymore such as the rod stiffener and a tarpon hotspot not choked with other boats. I could watch Apte fish all day long. His technique is flawless and a pleasure to watch. The Citrus Queen was not bad either.

To answer your question TR, Too many shows now are trying to sell you something rather than entertain you.

So funny to hear the narration and the music. Nice little blast from the past. Almost amazing how much has changed over the years.

Lordy, I haven't seen a Trihull boat out side of a junk yard in years. I bet that big slab sided scow was a mother to pole! At least the guy doing the work had some inspiration!

abcdpete; Hilarious! I gave you a +1 for that one! Awesome video! Loved the lounge music. Why don't fishing shows today feature more bikinis? Seems like a brilliant marketing ploy to me.

I like that old time stuff, I miss Gadabout Gadis, Marlin Perkins and the boys and the narration. And what do you guys mean nostalgic music? I still have it on my eight track, don't you, what?
PS, I also like watching normal guys fishing not these young guns dressed up like their getting ready to run a Nascar race with patches all over them.
