A River Runs Through Sprouts...

By Tim Romano

Apparently scientists have been trying to recreate a meandering river in the lab for nearly 100 years. Who would have guessed...? Now, thanks to alfalfa sprouts...

...they've figured it out. The lab experiment has implications for stream improvements, flooding, and development planning. Watch the video and learn all about it.

Oh, and if you need to waste a little more time at work check out my story over on the home page about dropping thousands of tiny fish from airplanes.

Enjoy,

TR

I've worked my whole life to grow a mustache like that guy. Now I know, it's the sprouts.

Trout & sprouts in one spot--bring along some beer (for the carbs) and you've got the whole meal.

I loved it! Finally a way to understand the mobility of a river so we can save our waterways if need be without damage it any further. This kind of study is good for the fish as well as the fowl and four legged animals. If we can understand how something works we can recreate and maybe bring back things we have lost. Just imagine... If they can create a river bed one day they'll figure out how to keep the P & J from squishing out the sides of the sandwich.

Great post TR!

The idea that sediment could be an answer, and not a problem is pretty amazing. At a local river, our conservation group talks a lot about sediment and this may bring some new information to the discussion.

finally they are creating rivers instead of destroying them. encouraging. i'd rather my tax dollars go to that instead of the banks.

The tax payers money at its best comment wasn't actually a bad thing.. just think 100 years of lab research and the amount of time and money that went into it.
