Tie Talk: How to Tie the Chardy Choker Permit Fly

By Tim Romano

The boys over at Gink & Gasoline somehow convinced Bruce Chard, a Florida Keys guide, to show them how he ties his signature fly for "shallow water, tailing permit, in thick grass."

It's a crab called the Chard Choker. While it's most likely a fly that very few of us will ever use, let alone hook a permit on, I thought I'd add a saltwater pattern to the Tie Talk list.

We all want to catch a permit on a fly rod, right? What better way to dream than by stocking that big ole, rarely used saltwater flats box in the bottom of the drawer.

Enjoy.

Change up the color scheme and it would make a great crayfish pattern.
