Photos: Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Underwater Flies
By Tim Romano
Thought I'd share my latest images from the book project I'm working on with Geoff Mueller, an editor over at the Drake. We're in the process of wrapping up the project and wanted to show you folks some greenback cutthroat in their natural environment; high in the headwaters of the Big Thompson River in Rocky Mountain National park, plus what you can accomplish with a five dollar aquarium, some flies, two flashes and a little ingenuity.
Enjoy.

Good pics make for a good book. I try to visualize how my flies ride/look in the water. I don't have to be anyway close to being accurate.
Really cool shots! ive got a week long Montana fly fishing trip planned in two weeks and am going to do extensive photo shoots as well as some GoPro footage. We are going to rig our drift boats with go pros and take stills and I am wondering if there is anyway to post it all on fly talk? Its going to be a good one and I hope the photo and video comes out as I plan. PLease let me know if there is an opportunity to post the material.
Also if you have any advice for a novice photographer it would be much appreciated.
Gtbigsky. What river will you be on..or rivers?
Sayfu,
The Madison, Yellowstone around sweet grass and big timber, possibly the Missouri, and luckily for me I have some connections to get on a private stretch of the Odell. I am really looking forward to fishing them all but am most excited about the Odell!
gtb...Wow! Good for you, and you educated me that there is a piece of waterway called the Odel. I don't live far from the Madison, and never heard of the Odell. I fear early morning, and evening fishing is going to be best on the Madison anyway. Darn hot weather, and warm water. We just had a drowning on my river, the SF of the Snake...guy and his wife.. driftboat capsized, and she drowned. High water, high wind, and they like a lot of boaters want to duck into a side channel, and have it to themselves. A fallen tree blocked the side channel...be safe, have fun.
Sayfu,
Strainers (fallen trees, branches, drift wood blocking river channels) are by far the most dangerous obstacles on the river. I figured as much for the Madison. Needless to say I am pretty excited to get out there. I miss MT a lot and am really happy i get to spend a week fishing with my good friends. As I posted earlier I am going to shoot some video and edit it. Hopefully it all turns out as planned
Awesome picts!
