What's the Best Camp Snack?

By Ben Romans

width=500

As I stated in the previous post, I went on a little camping-fishing-rafting trip last weekend in one of the most beautiful parts of the Montana. The weather was perfect, and the water was cold—terrific conditions for a trip down the river in a raft and the chance to tangle with a few feisty trout.

One night I made a discovery. Our friends brought all the ingredients to make s’mores by the campfire, except for one crucial ingredient—the chocolate. Instead, they brought Reese’s peanut butter cups. I admit I was leery about trying it at first, but after the first bite, I was glad I did. Now if I can just keep from burning the marshmallows on the end of my stick (like I did in the photo), I’ll have a new favorite campfire snack recipe.

Who else has some favorite or odd campsite treats? Aside from s’mores, I can’t get enough jerky or summer sausage (especially if it’s made from last year’s deer). My gut could be full but I’ll still try to stuff down a few extra mouthfuls. And what about camp meals? Are you more of a scrambled-eggs-and-pancakes person, or an oatmeal eater because it’s easy to make? —Ben

Mac and cheese, but with a twist, use 3 boxes, all the cheese packets, only 1/4 a cup of milk, and a bag of normal shredded cheese, and add some smoked sausage, it tastes good, and fills you up.

Go easy on it though Ben, it sits in you're stomach like a brick according to some I know.

The best camp food in my opinion is the barbecue well stirfry i guess you would call it. you take potatoes hot dogs hamburgers bratwurst corn and turkey if you have it. Then you smother the whole thing in bbq sauce and you have an extremely awesome dish. For trail food the best thing is a good granola bar.

Well if I'm in a hurry I always eat some easy mac. One time at my deer camp we forgot to buy stewed tomatoes for the chile. However, there was no shortage of spaghetti sauce around, so we figured we'd just use that. It tasted different from regular chili, but suprisingly very good.

I don't camp much, but homemade jerky from anything brought down by my own gun or bow is awesome to me. Sorry I can't find the recipe right now but basically you cut the meat into strips, soak it overnight in the 'fridge in a bowl of liquid smoke, salt, pepper, bbq sauce and you get the idea. Put it in the oven on tin foil on the top rack and let it cook at the lowest setting for at least four hours. Check it until it's dark and chewy.
