Hunting & Fishing Video Games: Cool or Lame?
By Ben Romans
I used to be into video games. Ah, who am I kidding? I still like to play them, it’s just a little harder to find the time these days.
That said, I haven’t had the chance to play any of these new super-realistic hunting and fishing games. Every time I pass by the displays at Bass Pro or Cabela’s there is already a string of kids lined up so the best I can do is stand and watch. I see that Bass Pro Shops came out with a new fishing game, The Strike, which has the added benefit of a lifelike rod/reel controller, and Remington has plans to create a lifelike shooting/hunting game with a controller modeled after a toy gun. Games have come a long way since the days of playing Duck Hunt on the original Nintendo.
Anyone out there enjoy playing these types of games? Any favorite titles? I have to admit I’m a fan when I can’t get out and do the real thing, but there’s no substitution for the real thing. —Ben
They are very unrealistic. The bass fishing ones never have snags, reel failures, broken rods, rods that fall off the boat. The fly fishing ones too, (Add knots into either game and you can't beat them.)

Unrealistic? What--you don't see a record book whitetail every time you go out? :)

For the most part they aren't very good. I've found that deer hunter 2004 is the best. Most of the other ones as soon as you get out in the woods there is a world record buck right in front of you. Unrealistic.
Rapala Pro Fishing is pretty realistic. There are snags and broken lines, and you lose way more fish than you catch. Both of the games you mentioned sound good. I like to play Hunting Unlimited 2009 or the Cabela's games sometimes. HU is pretty realistic and fun. My verdict is there's no substitute for the real thing, but they're fun to play when you can't be in the field.
Deer hunter 04 and 05 are by far the most realistic as far as animal awareness and encounters. All the cabela's games are total crap, they are more of a first person shooter than an actual hunting game.
