The Perfect Holiday Gift for Hunters

By Ben Romans

There’s a little over two weeks left until the nastiest shopping days of the year draw to a close. I cannot wait. The traffic jams, crowded stores, and all the aggravating time spent waiting in lines will go away and life will return to normal. OK, I’ll admit I’m somewhat of a “bah-humbug” person when it comes to the holidays, but even I know there is a bright side to all this...

...The gifts!

Everyone in my family wants to know what I want for the holidays, and I have yet to come up with a good answer. I’m not being difficult, I just can’t decide what I want or need. So I’m asking for the can't-go-wrong present once again—gift cards.

In my family, I’m the self-appointed king of gift cards. I like to buy them, and I love to receive them. When I wake up and look under the tree on Christmas morning, I don’t want to see any wrapped boxes labeled for me—just envelopes. It’s the gift that keeps on giving until the balance reaches zero. And to be honest, I can’t wait. I’ll take an afternoon, head to the store, and burn through them without flinching—probably on stuff I really don’t need.

I’m curious what everyone else is asking for this year? I’m thinking I’ll dedicate some of my gifted plastic on a new bow or some new binoculars, when I reality I should probably be looking at some new camo garb. But what’s new and hot on your list? I’m sure I’m missing out on something. Big or small—hit me with it. —Ben

Hey BenC., if you get one of those video units, you'll have to let me know how you like it. . . I've been thinking about getting one, but I haven't heard any first-hand accounts about video quality or zoom functions. . . I thought it would be a great tool to carry in a pack while out hunting.

I'm going to start video taping my own hunts aswell but you can never go wrong with a new bow! I personally have the Mathews Monster and love it but I have also shot the new Z7 from Mathews and I'm very impressed. I'd check out the mathews line of bows, very good quality!

You know what, I've been thinking about getting one of those Vado cameras too. I'm pretty much going straight fishing this Christmas other than that. A new baitcasting, and new ultralight. Along with a gift card to the local fly shop. Gift cards are always, always welcome. (That contest I won in February has me absolutely hooked on that stuff.) By the way, has anybody shot the new Hoyt Maxxis? If I was going to buy a new bow, it would be either that or the Z7. Haven't seen many reviews for either.

Oh, and Ben R. I'm not sure if you've seen it, but if you click on the link on this website or Field and Stream, you can see a clip taken with the Vado unit. It appears to be pretty good quality.

I'm good with anything for hunting or fishing, but this year I'm especially looking for duck and goose calls and a Joby Gorillapod (gorillapod.com). It's a pretty cool tripod that can wrap around pretty much anything. My old hunting tripod broke so that's why I'm looking for a new one.

That's a good tip Tommy, i've been thinking about a matthews. . . My current bow is not very "forgiving" so i'm thinking about a new one and most of my friends have been saying good things about the new matthews bows. . . I'll have to go shoot a few over the Christmas holiday.

I will be test firing a Z7 a.s.a.p. because I have a circa 1970 bow that has the old school sights with a two pronged rest that an arrow can easily fall into. That is a great gift idea Tommy.
