Bourjaily: Are You America’s Top Shot?
Can you shoot? Are you in shape? Are you a character?
If you can answer “yes” to all three, you might be the contestant Pilgrim Productions is looking for to appear on the History Channel’s upcoming “America’s Top Shot.”
Pilgrim – producers of “Ultimate Fighter”, ”Dirty Jobs” and “Ghosthunter” – needs to cast 16 shooters. One will eliminated each week in a marksmanship challenge until the last man or woman standing claims the $100,000 prize. Because this is a History Channel show, weekly competitions could feature any projectile weapon ever made, from atlatls to assault rifles.
Pilgrim’s Semi Aboud – casting producer and fellow Lebanese-American – says: “The kind of person who will do well will be an expert in one type of shooting, but will be able to pick up other kinds quickly.” In addition he says: “Contestants will have to be physically fit. Some of the challenges will involve running, climbing, and lifting heavy objects and shooting.”
Finally, Aboud notes, “You will need a big personality. I hesitate to use the word “character” but this is is TV after all and we want people who are interesting to watch and root for. You will have to be able to express yourself when interviewed about your feelings about the other contestants.” Having read the comments to this blog, I have no doubt all of you are well-qualified in the “big personality” and “expressing feelings about others” departments.
Not all the details are final. You may shoot these events in historical costume. You may wind up living in a house with 15 other shooters during the filming. At any rate, it will be an adventure, and how cool would it be if a Gun Nut reader appeared on the show?
Application deadline is Jaunaury 18. Click here for your chance.

Ok, now THAT is a reality show worth watching.
Not only am I applying, (not really), I am going to watch!
Wish I had the personality big enough for it...
The running and climbing part leaves me out !
I really thought about it... Still thinking.
But for us "more mature" gentlemen, it's a question of how strenuous the activity is. At 18, I could do the Marine obstacle course in pack, helmet, and rifle. But there's been ... ahem... a few decades since then.
Hey guys NOS but some SEALS need our help. They are being court martialed for roughing up terrorist scum that killed Americans. Here's the link:http://us.mc1107.mail.yahoo.com/mc/welcome?.gx=1&.tm=1260894183&.rand=1tal8cucr2tmb#_pg=showMessage&sMid=2&pSize=25&fid=Inbox&mid=1_3236542_ANENw0MAAVAtSyeQdwGfRz0d4vg&sort=date&order=down&filterBy=&.rand=1780700710&startMid=0&clean&.jsrand=536717
Hope it works.
No thanks for me. I'll be 60 in a couple months. This is about 3 decades too late for my tired old self.

Maybe this time it will work. Please save the SEAL three.
I can run, lift and shoot...I just would be boring to watch!
Hey Clay this is down your alley. You can shoot and you are a character(meant as a compliment). But can you still run?
This should be interesting show. Liek the idea of using various weapons for the contest; one week a M-16, next week a flintlock, etc.
Chad love should be representing F&S!
SBW
I'd love to think i'd be competetive, but not living in a very shooter friendly area, my lack of practice would put me at a disadvantage.

Run?
Last year my Grandson Alex had me do a Show & Tell for his Class. At the end of it, he told the teacher I ran 4 miles in 24 minutes. Teacher looked at me and I said, what he said is true, 100 pounds ago!!
I'm putting my money on any female in the competition.
Dang, that was quick. Good job Editors!
At 68 I think I will pass, I shoot pretty well with Pistols, Rifles & Shotguns but the rest of that stuff NO WAY!
I think it would be great, I could just see it could eliminate many bench shooters. I also wonder if when you shoot some of these weapons, if the first time you shoot will be in the weekly contest.
I put my money on the Marine or SEAL who just got out, that is just a little off.
That would be great to see and would totally blow away that Ghosthunter concept. That show was so bad ,the reruns are going to be haunting.
Are they going for high speed photograph to show where mistakes where made?
Buckhunter ,The way ratings work ,I would suspect the female to be the ringer that takes a fall towards the end.
As much as I am overjoyed to see some type of shooting competition receive mainstream media validation of sorts, I am saddened it is in the venue of a reality show.
I most likely won't watch the show because of my distaste for all reality TV shows.
I nominate BrigMarine to be the “America’s Top Shot.”He still young, served active duty in Camp Lejeune U.S.M.C. I beleive strongly that he could do this and get some Marine..Honestly can't do this anymore due to five surgery I had from the Marine Corp and the Army..The neck, back, shoulder, knees and feet!!!
Sorry, but this is just going to be an annoying show for me. "Big personalities" mean that they are looking for ratings, not necessarily the top shot.
A bit off the subject; why knowing how to use a firearm is as important today as it was 200+ years ago.
http://www.clickorlando.com/news/21970624/detail.html
I don't think this show will beat out Impossible Shots but the atlatls will make it interesting.
I can only imagine the characters the producers are gonna pick... a rugged ex-marines, city boys, a ganster, a cook, a farmer, a yuppie, a girly girl and of course they'll throw a homosexual in the mix. I'm already not interested.
Your probably right Buckhunter and they will probably rig it so the girly girl or girly man will win. (Or maybe tie). Gotta be PC on the tube.
del-ks:
I wished that article had a link to email a message of support to help these Seals. What has our gov'ment become when it fails to stand up for these patriots!
Back on topic, I also will have to pass as a contestant, not that I can't shoot anymore, just watching me run in real time would resemble slow motion (think of the old "6 Million Dollar Man" TV show) Hard to work that into a one hour show!
Have to wonder what type of "projectile" weapons they will come up with - howitzer, harpoon gun, ship cannon, trebuchet, ballista, rocket launcher, spud gun? A real rail gun would be nice. And the targets? The more exotic the the weapon and target the better the ratings, I suppose.
Ever notice how many homo couples are on the house hunting and home makeover shows? Probably more of the same.
Let's see... the Alaska Experiment meets firearms and pointy things... the same sinveling cast members which include Buckhunter's afore mentioned descriptions. This should paint a very positive picture of shooters and hunters for the non-shooting public. Wonderful just what we need and just what I DON'T watch the History Channel for.
They did a very positive, tasteful and informative show called "Tales of the Gun" a number of years ago before reality TV reared its ugly head.
I wish I could try! seeing the looks on the guys faces when a chick out shoots them is priceless. it's a little like peeing on kittens though (kinda cruel)
They say you have to be proficient at something, but not everything. It wouldn't be much fun to stack the whole cast with ex-Recon types.
I think your prediction about the line-up for the cast might be close to the truth. They're gonna want loud-mouthed prima-donnas with a dash of whine. Just like every other "real" show.
I shouldn't apply. I'd be too tempted to use some of that armament on the rest of the cast.
Urinating on kittens...how rude.
Squirrel Girl, my wife worked in a sporting goods store while in college. Some condescending he man would come in with his 1100 Shotgun in pieces because he "cleaned it" and would want to have one of the guys put back together. They would always hand it to her and have her reassemble the gun. The look on fellow’s face was priceless. She still does the same type if thing today!
I do not think that this will turn into a crummy reality show. I mean, it's the History Channel we're talking about here. If any of you actually watch it, the shows are amazing. I have high hopes for this series.
Nate
Let’s see, 100 pounds ago? Won the High School weightlifting Championship for the 160 pound weight class, able to run 4 miles in 24 minutes catch my breath and do it again, shoot like my Father who was on the Air Force Shooting Team!
So the question is?
Can you shoot?
Yes
Are you a character?
That's a no brainier I'm sure everyone will agree on that!
Are you in shape?
NOT!
you can leave it up to me Del, I think it's about time one of these show put someone about my age (15) on there give it a different perspective.
never mind, must be 21 ha. I bet i'd do better than half those people on there. You can be certain there will be some idiot from the cities who don't even know the difference from the safety to the trigger on there, but he'll still be cocky as all get out.
If you have to be in shape, I'm out!
To bad, I think having some Crusty Ol'NCO's and O'Farts would be far more entertaining than watching a group of of a group of testosterone driven think they know it all!
Us Old Farts would be saying, hey watch this! Now how funny and entertaining would that be!!!!
SOB,
Moishe served with Lt. General Hal Moore. He's a G#D Damn hero.
25 years ago I would have been 1st in line...but it ain't gonna happen now!
im only 17, but they say the camera adds 10 years, does that count??
i could pull of the fitness part without a problem i think and well i'm opinionated enough. i just wonder how good of a shot you have to be? lol
I don't meet the qualifications. Nice to dream though.
good shooter....definitely; character.....absolutely! running, climbing, lifting heavy objects....aw sh**!
I knew there would be a catch to it. It is heartening though to see a TV show with shooting competition in it. This could be worth watching. I'm getting a little tired of Tupelo Flash anyway. HOO RAH to the 16 ga. Society. I just acquired an English sxs 16 with 29" barrels straight stock, splinter FE that weighs 6 lbs. Winter dove season can't get here fast enough.
Phil,
Judging by the remarks here, it sounds like someone needs to feature a similar thing for us older types. The results might be surprising...and we are most always characters, to have survived 60+ years.Golf has Senior tournaments, even the Olympics have Senior Olympics....then, around the campfire, you will have tons of true stories and experiences, to boot.
Watching young people be athletic gets....boring, after a bit.
Blue
Reminds me of the times when I would take theCombat Engineer Rifle team to FT. Knox and the people on the M-60 team had to run down range and set up the M-60, fire, pick up, run again. I realy felt sorry for these guys, but they would do it. I was offered to go to sniper school once, but don't believe I could handle all the running.. A lot like jump school but quite a few years ago.. I will surely watch this show.
blue ridge, they do, it's called "benchrest" or "metallic silhouette". shooting..Bourjaily might do it...Maybe Dave ?
I've already got the winners picked out....
First place: Dave
Second place: Bourjaily
and
Third place: Clay
and if there's a third place: Del
I'm saving the last place for : Me.
Any bets?
Sorry, Del is in forth....
sarg
Speaking of metallic shooting, have you ever been to Ben Avery Arizona Shooting Range Facility in Phoenix?
When I'm on the 1000 yard line, the Metallic range was on my left and it was so tempting to slide my butt to the right and take out the Rams 1000+ yards away! But I didn't, I don't think they would have appreciated it!
Aw, come on, Clay
That's no fun. What is fun is when you poke a few errant holes on the Range Monkey's target a few benches down after hearing him spout off to anyone who will listen about blah, blah, blah. Just can't understand where the "flyers" came from. He He.
Well, the "will involve running, climbing, and lifting heavy objects" part pretty much counts me out, I AM a heavy object!
Other than that if it flings sumpthin' downrange I've probably tried it at some point......
Other than military grade toys that is....
Bows, crossbows, rifles, pistols, muzzleloaders, slingshots, potato guns (which have a surprising kick BTW, do not hold it in front of your face to sight down the barrel.......) paintball, lazertag (was very fun in the woods at night!) blowgun, knife and hatchet throwing, and probably other stuff I've forgotten......
steve182,
Just remember, push comes to shove 1 shooter is better than 100 non shooters.
Just saying.......
I know a lot of you don't know me quite as well as some of the real regulars (WA Mtnhunter, Del, Clay, etc..) but I try to keep pretty active on the site. I'm gonna give it a shot to get on the show. I'm relatively young (25) but grew up shooting by my fathers teachings and developed quite the nack for it. I think I would represent the values of this group pretty well as I have almost always been standing right along side many of the opinions and views that get expressed in these columns. It's a huge long shot but I just thought I'd let you guys know that someone who's somewhat regular to the site and to the Gun Nut columns will be trying his best.
Buckhunter,Thanks for the kind words, but I am no hero just one more pore slob who did not get to pick where he served his time in Nam.
SD Whitetail Hunter -- I'll be watching for you. Good luck!

We're pulling for you, son! Keep us informed by the way. I'm too old for that sort of stuff now.
SD_Whitetail_Hntr,
Good Luck and Make us proud here in Field and Stream family!!!
Thanks for the support guys!! Gives me that much more inspiration to give it my best shot when you all are pulling for me. If by some wild chance I did make the show I would thoroughly enjoy the conversations I'm sure we will put together as the show goes on (heckling as well, Thanks Clay :) )
SD Whitetail Hunter 40 years ago I would have tried it, make me proud!
Zermoid, yeah, i agree. I'm a shooter. Just not as frequent a shooter as the guys here with a range on their property, or 400 acres. Leading up to deer season, i practice(shoot) a good bit, but after feb. I might not shoot for months. In my opinion, some of the best shooter out there are bird hunters. The bird hunting here is lousy and crowded, therefore i've never been a bird hunter, but the one's i know, they can shoot, not just birds.
I grew up in NJ, one of the few things they did in favor of shooters was to stock alot of pheasants and quail!
Here (at least in my neck of the woods) in PA I've never seen a quail, and can count the pheasants on one hand! We do have a fair ruffled grouse population, if I could just hit one of them........
Have shot many trees trying though.....
Mostly Squirrels, Turkey and Deer (and not many deer either the last few years) around here. Get yourself a good quality Air Gun, cheaper to shoot and the mechanics of aim and shoot are the same, but alot quieter and more "socially acceptable" then the big boomers are. I lucked into a 22 cal single shot pellet pistol a couple of years ago, uses CO2 cylinders and 22 cal pellets, accurate as all get out and great practice pistol around home. Best part? Found it at a "new and used" shop for $10. Best $10 I ever spent, pellets are a little hard to come by but most bigger gun stores carry them.
I used to have a membership at a local gun club, with a 1,000 yd range. Unfortunately a new President a few years ago jacked up the dues from $10 a year to $250 a year. Way too much for me. Been looking for another place with a good range and reasonable dues ever since. There are a few small "ranges" around here, none over 100 yds and most a 1 or 2 person deal, basically 1 shooting lane on a first come first served basis. At least those are free......
It's getting worse though not better, even in the gun loving state of Pennsylvania, most of the local shooting spots I've used for years are now posted, being built up or being strip mined, or a combination there of.
I really worry that in a few more years my kids will have no where to hunt or shoot as both are going the way of the Dodo bird......
SOB2,
What started the problem? Was it deleted or in another thread, cuz I personally missed it.......
Whatever it was it ain't a problem to me so all's forgiven.
Zermoid,You should start a campaign to out that PUTZ as President of that Club, he is confusing hissef with that &^%$ in Washington.
I think I know someone who just might win this challenge! Think I will share it on my facebook profile and see if he is up for it! This is SWEET!

Hey Clay this is down your alley. You can shoot and you are a character(meant as a compliment). But can you still run?
This should be interesting show. Liek the idea of using various weapons for the contest; one week a M-16, next week a flintlock, etc.
Chad love should be representing F&S!

I'd love to think i'd be competetive, but not living in a very shooter friendly area, my lack of practice would put me at a disadvantage.
A bit off the subject; why knowing how to use a firearm is as important today as it was 200+ years ago.

never mind, must be 21 ha. I bet i'd do better than half those people on there. You can be certain there will be some idiot from the cities who don't even know the difference from the safety to the trigger on there, but he'll still be cocky as all get out.
i could pull of the fitness part without a problem i think and well i'm opinionated enough. i just wonder how good of a shot you have to be? lol
I think I know someone who just might win this challenge! Think I will share it on my facebook profile and see if he is up for it! This is SWEET!
Your probably right Buckhunter and they will probably rig it so the girly girl or girly man will win. (Or maybe tie). Gotta be PC on the tube.
I do not think that this will turn into a crummy reality show. I mean, it's the History Channel we're talking about here. If any of you actually watch it, the shows are amazing. I have high hopes for this series.
Nate
by the way lets work together and shut up those stupid peta members i mean how is it inhumane is it to have a bulldog for a mascot!
SD Whitetail Hunter 40 years ago I would have tried it, make me proud!
Zermoid,You should start a campaign to out that PUTZ as President of that Club, he is confusing hissef with that &^%$ in Washington.
