Bourjaily at Pheasant Fest 2010

By Philip Bourjaily

National Pheasant Fest, Pheasants Forever’s annual meeting/convention/trade show took place in Des Moines at the Iowa Events Center February 26-28. Thirty thousand people attended the event to sit in on hunting and conservation seminars and to check out dogs, guns, gear, destinations and some odds and ends in the exhibit halls. Click here or on the photo of Rudy the Rooster below to take a look at what I found on the festival floor.

who would think an invasive species would become such a great hunting bird?

Too bad Iowa's pheasant populations are down and this winter has not been kind to them. I rarely saw a pheasant this year and most of them were roosters. Very few hens. I never even hunted them this year, which is sad.

I've quit hunting the last 3 years too.
The clincher for me was when I didn't even take a shot on opening day once.

Phil,

What the heck!! A flame retardant suit won't be enough to save you for slyly supporting the disparaging comment regarding Labs.

On a side note, your photo of the cool lanyards – Do you use one and what do you hang from it? I’ve seen the flush counting “do-dads” and wondered if anyone uses them except for the high-brow grouse/woodcock hunting crowd. I hand a whistle and car keys from a cheap Dicks sporting goods lanyard.

Great photos and comments by the way the event looks like a lot of fun.

Scott in Ohio -- I have one of Don Otey's Coyote Leather duck call lanyards -- they are the same as those you see in the picture with detachable loops for calls. I've fallen out of the habit of using a whistle for upland hunting.
