Calling All Gun Nuts: Ask a Queston, Win a Hat

By Phil Bourjaily

As we get ready for Season II of The Gun Nuts TV show, we’re thinking of adding a reader question segment where I (and possibly Dave, too) would answer your questions about guns, hunting, shooting and related subjects. We’re thinking we’ll run one per show, for a total of 13.

So, we’d like your questions. If we use them, we’ll give you a Gun Nuts hat like the ones Dave and I wear on the show. And, while there are no stupid questions, some questions make better TV than others. So, what do you want to know?

Gun Nut Experiment #549

Question: how come the deer I shot ran so far when shot at 50 feet, the shot was perfect!

What is needed for experiment

1- 30-06 with 24 inch barrel with 1-12 twist.

2- 2 rounds of 30-06 150 grain Full Metal Jacketed Military ball ammunition. Reason, to find out what caused bullet failure at such a short range. Must understand what happens upon impact and as the bullet travels through and what effects its penetration.

3- 2”x 12”cut to 3 foot lengths and held together with screws to form a 3 foot thick block.

Directions to perform the experiment

Placing the stacked lumber at 50 feet, shoot the first 30-06 150 grain FMJ horizontally center and 12 inches from the bottom.

The second shot at 200 yards horizontally center and 12 inches from the top.

(Before dismantling the block, remember the muzzle velocity is approximately 2900 fps and at 200 yards, the bullet has slowed down.)

After shooting the two rounds carefully dismantle the 2”x12”x 3’ and notice what happens to the bullet as it impacts and travels through the wood.

If performed correctly, this will change the way you think about shooting game

You can find this experiment in Hatchers Notebook

I've heard that weather you're shooting up or down in elevation, you should aim high. At one point someone even tried to explain the physics (or was it geometry?) of it to me. It seems counterintuitive to me, because I'd think you'd have to aim high only when you're shooting up to compensate for the fact that the bullet is climbing. What's the truth here?

dbarry you had better be a good tracker and a fine shot if you are using roundballs. They do not expand and after I lost a big buck I shot with one and knocked on his ass, only to see him get back up and run away, I bought an inline with a fast twist. I started using .44 Hornady XTP's and sabots and never lost another deer shot with black powder.

I would like to see a comparasion of the new Hornaday 35 rem ammo and the old style Winchester ammo from a down range energy delivery standpoint. I switched from Wnchester to Hornaday a few years back and got a 12 inch rise in impact point at 100 yards but the Hornaday doesn't seem to take them off their feet like my old ammo. I am using a 1960 Marlin 336 that was my fathers and now that I live in Alaska I'm considering a moose hunt with the old girl. Dad would be amused.

I hear ya Dr. Ralph. My point is that patched round ball is what was used for years. IMO, silly on some forums people scoff at a .243 or 30-30 for wild boar, for instance. I've seen those (and patch round ball) dispatch a 300lb+ pig - didn't bounce off shoulder as some have written (read bs). Would be fun to hear this done well on a gun magazine show...

I have a question about barrel harmonics. As a rule I have been told NEVER to rest the barrel of my rifle on anything while shooting. So, I always rest on the forend. Lately, I've been watching people shoot blackpowder or buffalo gun silhouette competitions and I see competitors resting their barrels on shooting sticks. They continue to make excellent shots with their equipment. What gives? Is the hardness of the rest a factor? The barrel diameter?

Oil vs. wax.

Is car wax a better way to protect rifles from rust than oil? I live in humid climates (Mississippi and Louisiana) and put a coat of turtle wax on my blued rifle and it never rusts, even when taken into rain. The water beads. I find it to be WAY better than gun oil as gun oil tends to evaporate quicker.

I have always used the archaic technology of "wiping the barrel and action with a cloth" when it gets wet in combination with my turtle wax theory. I spray furniture wax on the stock also and have had no issues with the wood since it is sealed, but some people think I am wierd for not using oil on the outside of the barrel and action. Any thoughs on this?

I have an old single shot. On the receiver is printed,
J STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO
CHICOPEE FALLS,MASS. USA
on the other side is
TRADEMARK
STEVENS
Reg. US Pat OFF&FGH (pretty hard to read, worn)
On the barrel it has 44-SHOT
Was this made as a single shot rifle. It was used as a 4-10. Newer 4-10 shells don't fit, too long. What's it worth? It has a pull down fingerguard which opens it up.

What is the proper technique for barrel break in?

I'd like you to elaborate on TJ's question, specifically, is there an NRA article that discusses breaking in 22 rimfire (leaded bullets)? And, then, is there a difference for breaking in high power barrels (ie bullets that have gliding metal jackets)? Thank you. If you do this question, the hat to TJ, I'd just like to know more about barrel break in. Thank you.

Two good TV Questions:

1. What is MOA and how does one explain it to a young shooter?

2. Bulk Ammunition: With the high costs and scarcity of ammunition, what brand or brands of bulk cost efficient pistol and rifle ammunition do the gun nutz recommend? To answer this you could test a whole mess of different brands..........

I just purchased my first shotgun (Rem. 870 Supermag 26" Composite). Is there anything that I need to do out of the box to get it ready to shoot (rem oil, etc.)? Also, if I wanted to purchase a 28" barrel to interchange, would there be any other adjustments that I would need to make?

Oil vs.

The question I propose is when the U.S. Army chose the Colt M1911 .45 ACP caliber pistol over 100 years ago it did so because of the stopping ability of the round and, since the early 1980's, replaced it with the Beretta M9 9mm pistol, which is really the better gun and caliber to have and why?

Have been considering a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 or an 870 Remington with 3" cast slugs ( Dixie Cast Slugs )out of a rifled barrel. Would you suggest either one of these and which would be the better choice?

Or What is all the controversy over the AR platform as a hunting rifle? Is it just because it is the same basic design as the M4 or M16? So far that has been the only argument I've heard over my rifle. Just curious to see if there are other views on the weapon system or if its military background is the only thing that hinders its acceptance in the hunting community?
