Gun Nuts TV Season 2 and the New Gun Camera

By Phil Bourjaily

As Season Two of the Gun Nuts gets underway, I hope you will agree that one of the things about the show that is better than last year is our new gun cam. We have a new HD camera this year called a VIO cam, and if you are one of the many these days who wants to take POV videos of your hunting and shooting, the VIO is worth looking at.

As you can see in the picture, it’s very small – under an inch in diameter – and it comes with enough mounts to put on a gun or a hat or almost anywhere else. Also, unlike many other cameras, the VIO cam withstands recoil without turning itself off, making it way better for mounting on a gun.

Gun Nuts producer Jon Ross assures me the camera would be easy for an amateur to use. It arrived via Fed Ex during filming and Ross had it up and running on a shotgun in minutes. It lists for $599, which is not at all bad for an HD camera.

By the way, shooting with a camera mounted directly on your gun barrel is a challenge. It’s not too difficult on straightaways and gentle angles, but I had a lot of trouble hitting any kind of angled target. It was much easier for me to shoot with the camera mounted on the bill of my cap.

Episode One of the Second Season of Gun Nuts will air again on the Outdoor Channel Sunday at 6:30 a.m. EST. Episode Two will premiere on Wednesday at 5 and 8 p.m.

The price seems a little ridiculous compared to the Hero HD camera. The Hero camera also gives you an underwater body... For the money I'm going with the Hero - it also has all the mounting options (probably more) than the VIO is showing.

Looks like the mount would slip a bit with the recoil though, beginning at 00:48.

Looked like a Little equipment failure at the end dar LOL!

Need to get some of those tracers now and hope the camera doesn't have an allergic reaction to the recoil, but what better way for test and research!

Phil...Were Marty Fischer, and his partner, Bob Scott the first to design and use a headset camera so the viewer can view what they see as the back sight of the gun? I sure like it.

That could be a handy device for instructional purposes. It might help explain some of those misses.

The new gun cam has enhanced your production values, which is a good thing. However, I lament that the producers feel it necessary to now repetitively cut away from your commentary with static graphics of spec sheets, etc. It is distracting and interfers with the flow of the segment. I am a big fan of the program, however, and appreciate the overall value of the content that you and David provide. Thanks.
