On the Road: Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign
By Phil Bourjaily

I was in North Carolina on vacation last week. Halfway between Southport and Supply I saw the famous “Worms and Coffee” sign. While I didn’t really need gas, I couldn’t resist stopping in for $20 worth just so I could snap a picture with my smartphone.
The “Worms and Coffee” sign has been there since 1997, and has become a local landmark and attraction. Photos of the sign have appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and the "Late Show With David Letterman." And really, early in the morning if you’re on your way to go fishing, what more do you need than worms and coffee?
“Worms and Coffee” stands right with my all-time favorite sign, which I spotted on a turkey hunt in rural northern Missouri in the 1990s, when convenience store cappuccino was becoming a Thing. It was a variation on the classic “Guns, Beer, Ammo.” The sign read “Guns, Beer, Cappuccino.”
Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures, so you will have to take my word for it. It was classic, but perhaps some of you have seen other good ones on your travels. Anyone?

"Guns, Beer, Cappuccino"? Apparently there are a lot of yuppie sophisticated hunts in Northern MO. BTW is Missouri pronounced Miss-ur-ee or Miss-ur-a, being from Arkansas I've heard both. But then again folks from Kansas say Ar-KANSAS instead of Ar-kansaw. Just passed a local joint here with a sign Bait, Ammo, Used Cars.
Being from Kansas, I figure it's your state, you can decide how it should be pronounced.
But I admit, the way I was raised, the Arkansas River is the ar-KANSAS until it reaches ar-kansaw.
As for Missouri...it just depends on which part of the state you are in, so...do as the locals do.

My favorite sign of all time which I failed to photograph before the fine establishment had ceased operation was,,,,,
DAISEY'S BEAUTY SHOP AND GRILL
COMPLETE BEAUTY CARE AND HOMECOOKING
True story!
C&S automotive repair and beauty salon
A sign posted in a bar read "I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you."
A few towns over from where I lived in Vermont there was a saw mill that advertised "fair scale & prompt payment" on their sign.
My favorite from many years ago in a bar on Jefferson Ave in Birmingham:
"Stand Close, Don't Miss. Next Man May Be Barefoot."
"Guns Knives and Liquor" is a common sign near the Mississippi River towns and villages while travelling between Louisiana MO and the Iowa border. One of my peers made a good living as a commercial sign maker in this region covering these subjects.
We've got a Guns n Liquor sign down the road, and I don't think it's all that unusual in this part of Texas to meld the two (Beer, bait, and ammo is a little more mainstream), but I've always enjoyed showing people that sign. It's a great photo op.
But Worms and Coffee? That's got it hands down. It accomplishes the same sort of odd juxtaposition, but without any socially unacceptable overtones (guns and liquor feeds a certain negative connotation among some folks). Where, exactly is this? On Highway 17?
Right by Scheels in Sioux Falls, SD there's a Hancock Fabrics store. Do I need to explain which three letters on the store's neon sign needed replacing? Classic.
Somewhere in a small backwoods town of SW Washington, I saw a "Liquor Store & Chainsaw Repair" establishment. Now that's one stop shopping.
For years we had a combo gas station and restaurant with a huge sign that had "Eat Here and Get Gas".
I've seen that sign on another station since then.
The place that has the most "No Trespassing" signs is Stuttgart Arkansas!
HogBlog -- "worms and coffee" is on Hwy 211 and Midway Road
At one time, a sign painted on the side of a semi trailer in Hudson, Wisconsin advertised "Wisconsin's Finest Taxidermy & Cheese."
The Stockman's Bar in Missoula, MT is a local hangout. Bar is in the front part and card tables in the rear of the bar.
A sign on the bar says: "Liquor up front, poker in the rear".

at a bar in my hometown,"the same hands that clean the cigarette butts out of this urinal are the one's that mix your drinks".
Tillamook, Oregon is like the dairy capital of the state. Tillamook Cheese is famous allover the Pacific Northwest and beyond. For years the sign coming into town said, "Welcome to Tillamook, Oregon! Come smell our dairy air!" I was there a couple months ago. The sign is gone now.
There used to be a meat market in Southeast Texas called Stelly's. Their sign said "Stelly's Meat Market. You may beat our prices but you can't beat our meat."
Had a Radiator Repair shop In Williamsport PA that had a sign out front "Best place in town to take a leak", had a picture of a friend peeing on the sign years ago, sadly it got lost.
There was a sign in central Pa. that said "bridget is dangerous when wet." I don't know if it is still there. We had one on the road to our hunting camp that said Bare crossing. I have seen a few that said Dear Crossings. The worst one I ever saw said "POSTED, NO TRESSPASSING.
I miss Burma Shave!!!
on I-94 in Northern Wi. there is a billboard for "Govin's Meat and Berries" along with the standard "Beer bait snacks liquer gas"
In a small Illinois town, there used to be a restaurant with its name on the sign out front: The Hooker's Kitchen. A newspaper story explained the name: the restaurant was owned by a fellow who also operated a tow truck, in which business he had acquired the nickname, "The Hooker."
There once was a gas station in Harper, Texas with a sign reading, "Ed's Guns and Gulf."
I also once saw a sign in the men's room of a tavern. The sign was placed over a urinal trough with crushed ice in it. It read, "Please try not to hit the ice, as we may have need of it at the bar before the night is over."
Have fond memories from the early 70s of the Road Kill Cafe south of Big Timber Montana
Happy,
The Roadkill Cafe is still there on the Main Boulder Road in Mcleod.
Cheers

Phil, We must drive different roads in Missouri, the signs I see most frequently there are GUNS LIQUOR FIREWORKS :)
There is a sign in Osage, MN along highway 32 headed from Detroit lakes to Park Rapids that reads "eat here, get gas, and worms" its a small gas station with bait in the back and a restaurant attached. I have a photo of it somewhere on my phone. But I'm sure a quick google search will bring it up

Guns. Wedding dresses. Cold beer. Husseys general store. Windsor,me.
On inside of door in a women's restroom:
"To avoid problems, please consider flushing when half finished."
I kid you not.
