The 2012 Gun Nut Target Photo Contest Winner Announced!
By Editors

Once again, we asked readers to shoot a target from our July issue and incorporate it into a creative photo for the chance to win a brand-new rifle. James C. McCracken of Richmond, Va., (username: jmac543) took top prize in our third annual contest with this photo, which he calls “Second Amendment Thoughts.”
Each time he picks up his gun to go hunting with his sons, Jack and Christopher, McCracken explains, he is reminded of what our American forefathers went through to feed and protect their families. McCracken’s friend, Gram, played the part of James Madison, the author of the U.S. Bill of Rights and the “Father of the Constitution.”
McCracken won the contest prize: a new Smith & Wesson M&P15 Performance Center Rifle. Congratulations, James, and good shooting!

Great pic, and congrats!
Nice picture, but I don't see any bullet holes.
"TO ENTER: Shoot the special Gun Nut target found on page 65 of the July 2012 issue of Field & Stream magazine..."
I don't think this picture should of won.
If any of you saw my comments on the finalists page, I stand corrected.
And congratulations to the winner.
That being said, however, this image is a winner not based on any technical qualities. The composition is poor, and the exposure is off, and one can barely see the holes in the target ( they are there, though, if you look closely ).
This image is the winner based on a judging requirement that is not mentioned in the rules - sentimentality. The previous winners reflected this as well. So if they run this contest in the future, don't try to be clever, don't try for technical proficiency - aim for the heartstrings with a patriotic tribute, a love of the 2A, and so forth, and tech qualities are secondary.
I will say this much, however - at least it's not a straight out cliche like the previous winners were. It is an original image not based on anything else, and for that, the winner does deserve approval and proper recognition. Enjoy your new prize.
I have to say that I'm not mad at the winning photo. Congrats jmac, I can see the effort. Personally do I think there were better ones, yes, but I don't think it was egregious. It was one of two finalists that I thought could win.
steel, I'm going to have to say that you're being a little critical, but then again maybe from a publication like F&S we should be able to hold them and their contests to that high of a standard.
I know it's like whippin a horse with a bell gun to it's head but I have a bigger problem with the pool of finalist that this picture was chosen from. Like I said earlier, it was one of just two finalists that I thought had a chance, but looking over the full field of 357 original entrees I don't know that it was in the top 5 percent. But at least it did follow the guidelines that F&S set. And I can see that thought and effort were put forth.
Again, congratulations sir, nice piece of hardware you've just added to your collection.
And before anyone catches my typo and uses it to try to make my whole argument null I meant entries, not entrees...
Also the target was definitely shot,if you actually look at the picture(especially within the heart). Also if it was with that old 22 there, then I'll give jmac even more credit.
Great job jmac, your entry was great! What a good message:)
Thanks for the compliments, it was a good competition!
