Announcing the 2013 Gun Nut Target Photo Contest

By Phil Bourjaily

The target contest is back. Same idea, different theme. “I (heart) guns” is over. This year it’s the “Take the Gun Nut Challenge” competition starring America’s target, the beverage can. As before, the rules are simple: shoot the target. Take a creative picture. Send it in by September 30. Once all the photos are in, you vote for your favorite. The top five reader choices win Field & Stream hats.

Enter Your Photos and Print the Target Here

The editors will choose the grand prize winner and announce it on October 31, 2013. To spark your creative juices, we have pictured last year’s winner below.

To get your competitive fire lit, we’re also showing you the grand prize: a Smith & Wesson M&P10 rifle.

I had a chance to fondle one of these .308s at SHOT Show and, even though I have absolutely no use for one, I wanted it anyway. It’s a very nice rifle. It will make a great deer/pig/whatever-else-comes along rifle. Good luck to all and I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Moose, I don't think they're legal up here either and it would take a divine act of God to get one across the border anyway. Plus I don't like AR platform. Plus I don't own any guns I don't need and I don't need a new hunting rifle since I'm no longer hunting big game.

But, hey, let's have some fun and throw something in the contest anyway. No rule says we have to collect if we win.

I hope they do a better job at judging this time around.

I hope that this time, judging is based on the CRITERIA AS STATED IN THE RULES, and not on the unwritten one that the winner has to be some kind of tribute to patriotism, as it has been the previous three times. I suspect, however, that once again, the most clever, interesting, technically proficient, well composed and ORIGINAL ideas will lose out to a poorly composed and poorly exposed cliched tug at the heartstrings of whoever is judging the contest this year.

Hey Phil! I would love to be able to enter the contest but it seems the site will not upload my photo. I have tried for the past 4 hours to get one uploaded. All it does is show that it is processing but it will not post. What gives?

Results? Supposed to have been announced yesterday (October 31st) according to contest rules but can't find them anywhere on site. Tsk, Tsk...

RPR -

Well, they didn't announce on time last year. And since they judged the previous winners more on their patriotic content rather than on the posted rules, I wouldn't expect them to follow their own deadlines either, and I'd expect then to judge on patriotic cliches again for this year. Hoping I'm wrong, but just like Charlie Brown and Lucy with the football.........

Looked at the photos again -

It's probably safe to assume that the winner is going to be the ladies carrying the flag. It doesn't meet any of the judging criteria- it certainly isn't original or creative, and the entrant admitted a friend took the photo ( hello? team entry...?). But it's a tearjerker patriotic tribute, and that's what counts. I wish that F&S would dump the pretense of posting judging rules since they're not following them anyway. Or maybe, for next year, extend the prize pool to a second and third place ( perhaps a Bodyguard .380 and a gift card to Cabelas, Gander Mountain, or Bass Pro ) so that people who make the effort to create ORIGINAL imagery could be recognized.
Of course, I could be wrong, so if a original image wins, in the words of Roseanne Roseannadanna-
"Nevermind....."
Just figured I'd get my opinion out before the winning announcement.

Nearly two weeks after the announcement was to have been made, nothing. Emails to website administrator and Editor have gone unanswered. I will of course write to the sponsor, S&W, to ask whether they feel their best interests have been served by a botched contest.

Yes, I'll be honest, I completely did my photos based on patriotism, simply to try to win, since that's all they look at. Plus, I'm not surprised they're announcing late, since no rules are ever followed. It's almost like they hope by choosing so long after the deadline that no one will notice what a poor choice they made once again...

No shame in being honest, tgarrett. I did a few patriotic shots myself - while trying to avoid the obvious cliches, if possible ( hoping they'd do it right this year, but it doesn't look that's going to happen ). One of the things that I find curious about this is that there were only about 400 entries. I am involved in photography, and that includes photo editing - that is, editing out images from consideration for publication, printing, etc. It should not take weeks and weeks to edit down a pile of 400 images, unless the people who are doing the editing have absolutely no clue as to what they're doing. It certainly showed last year that they didn't.

Yeah, no kidding. I don't get why it takes so long either. There are honestly just a handfull of pictures that should in theory be up for the winner. The majority of the pictures are of someone standing there holding the target saying "Please pick me because I want a new gun." So really they should have just a couple dozen or so to choose from.

There may be another possibility here.

It could very well be that a winner has been contacted already, but there may be issues with whether or not the gun can be legally owned in the winner's state, or can be legally owned because of age restrictions, legal issues, and so on. So a winner may have been contacted, disqualified, and then a move on to the next possible winner has been made. But it would be nice if F&S would stop keeping us in the dark.

Yeah no kidding. Just let us know what's going on...a month after the winner is supposed to be picked is ridiculous. It shouldn't take this long.

All of the (voluminous) prior comments regarding the utter disaster of this contest (no winner announced six weeks after the Oct 31 date) have now been erased by the website administrator? From bad to worse...
