Don't Look, Kids. This Duckling's About to Get Piked Up

By Joe Cermele

Maybe some of you have actually seen this happen. Others have probably secretly dreamed of seeing it unfold in the wild. Then there are those, like me, that dream of one day actually catching a pike or muskie on a duckling-shaped topwater lure. For the latter two, here's some excellent video proof that members of the Esox family do, indeed, dine on cute baby duckies.

Wow, catching a pike on a duckling lure would be great sport.

Intense! Crazy how that last little kick gave him so much acceleration.

I've never actually seen it, but I did get a pike around that size with a bird inside it a few weeks ago. Pretty neat video!

New lure idea for ICAST 2012 Berkley's Rubber Ducky with flailing feet and two treble hooks works great for salt/freshwater species on a slow troll! Even on a downrigger this lure is a no miss! Mostly bitten out of curiosity, this lure is so reliable & versitile you could even catch hawks and small game just by leaving it on the back deck! Just be sure to leave your trail cam and send us your pics for a chance to win Abu Garcia's new manually operated swedish-made nose hair trimmer with a 10.5:1 ultra high speed gear ratio!

Nice to see a video of what I have witnessed several times. While I have fished with baby-duck lures (and done well) a T55 red&white Flatfish works just as well because it floats. Cast parallel to the deep edge of a weed bed. Little, tiny, twitch of a retrieve. Watch for a V-shaped wake coming toward the lure. Hang on. Watching a rainbow suck under a dry fly was never like this!

I've seen a duckling go down to a pike as well as a snapping turtle. Same lake, too.

Many many years ago, when the national debt was zero and you could carry a knife to school, I witnessed a bass take a small bird off a tree limb just above the water. This Spring I witnessed it again. Still hoping to see the other two in my lifetime.

Always something chilling about a fish coming up top to eat a completely oblivious bird or small mammal that you can't take your eyes away from! I have never seen a fish do it but have seen a snapping turtle do it several times growing up.
