"Salmon Fishing In The Yemen." What Do You Think?
by Joe Cermele
Not since Brad Pitt showed us the shadow cast in A River Runs Through It has a major motion picture been released with a big emphasis on fly fishing. Then along comes Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. The gist of the story is that a Middle Eastern sheik wants to introduce British-style salmon fishing to the desert, and McGregor, who plays a fisheries biologist, is brought in to help the sheiks's vision become a reality. Much like A River Runs Through It, it appears from the trailer below that a love story is woven in, along with plenty of drama, and touching moments. So I'm curious: as anglers, does this flick pique your interest? I don't go to the movies very often, but it seems we have a film here that perhaps both the Mrs. and I can enjoy. And that's rare. Salmon Fishing In The Yemen is due out in March 2012.

Is it bad to have never seen A River Runs Through It?
Koldkut,
Yes. Yes it is. Go rent it right now. You are really missing out.
Koldkut, Shame on you. Just might unfriend you on Facebook now. At least read the book. Puts the movie to shame.
I would watch this movie. The story line interest me and I am a Ewan Mcgregor fan. It is not fair to compare it to A River Runs Through It. I can relate to fishing in Montana, not Yemen.
In that case Buck you better not enter my "win a trip to fish in Yemen" caption contest I'll be running next month.
Seems interesting, I enjoyed a "runs through it." Probably more interested in the technical story line for this one. Deep water discharge from an impoundment maybe? Oil dollars have done stranger things!
Ah, to be a sheik. Driving around the desert in my gold plated limo viewing all the ridiculous whimsies that an oil billionaire squanders his money on……exotic animal parks, harems, and an artificial salmon river.
Ok, I’m a closet Ewan McGregor fan so I’ll probably go see the thing or at least pick it up from redbox. And BTW, I might transfer harem out of the squander category to discretionary spending. Just a thought.
Can't say that this movie looks anywhere as close to as good as "A River Runs Through It" was. Looks like it's main focus is a love story. I highly doubt I'll watch this in a theater. Might rent it...
Everyone should see "A river runs through it" fisherman or not. If this is based on a true story, it's good to see that at least won Sheik knows how spend his money. Bringing the greatest sport on earth, for the king of all game-fishes, to a nation full of underprivileged people? That's a pretty good way to spend some cash.
I may just have to go see this! Very interesting!
Looks like a good movie. Definitely one the wife and I could both get into.
This looks pretty cool. I like the idea a lot. I will see it for sure.
I really enjoyed watching "A River Runs Through It and when I heard that this film would be coming out, I naturally got excite to see another great one. I like the idea behind this and am very excited to see how it takes shape.

Yes, I would give it a watch. I've been a Fan of EM since I saw the documentary where him and a buddy rode motorcycles around the world. "The Long Way Round" I think it was named. I doubt this one compares to ARRTI though.
Kevin
I will definitely watch. It's not a preposterous idea for anglers in "famously hot" Columbia, SC who catch put and take trout in the 100 degree dog days of summer in the Lake Murray tailwater. Beekeeper is on the money!
Absolutely not. It boggles the mind that anyone would come up with this concept. What's next: camel racing on Alaskan glaciers?
i dont mind a romance movie from time to time, and i love fishing. But when you put them together in a movie, i just dont think it will work. It looks like there's barely any fishing in it.
What got me was using a CH-47 Chinook to bring in the fish! Looks as if it has real possibilities. Looking forward to March and hoping my local theater will be showing it otherwise I'll buy the DVD, I guess.
