Wrestling Match: Spearfisherman Vs. Monster Grouper
By Joe Cermele
Everyone thinks it's those pesky sharks you need to watch out for when you're reeling in fish around a reef. What people don't realize is that more often than not, it's a big, mean grouper that chomps your catch, not a hammerhead. Goliath grouper in particular have no qualms about shooting up from the bottom to grab an easy meal. In the video below, a catch this spearfisherman thought was secure was actually far from it. He might have to change that wetsuit after this one.

I was excited for this one after reading the title. That was a good video, that guy is happy to just have his hand back
As always, the faifthul cameraman is there to help.... help capture the moment
What a behemouth! I guess it is doing what comes natural for a grouper.
That's awesome. I think I know where the next spear was headed...
Depending on waters they are in, they may or may not be able to take the grouper.
Looked to me like the line, spear and gun were still attached to the fish which is probably why the diver seems to be trying to stop the theft of his fish.
If that grouper did try to swallow that fish along with the spear and gun, that in itself might have killed him, which would certainly be a big waste of a grand fish...
Does anyone have any additional info on the outcome?
Man, that is really funny. I bet the spear fisherman got a bit startled! He is lucky the Grouper didnt swallow his arm and drag him down.
Thats a small goliath...and I have seen plenty. But the fact that it came right up and snatched the fish from the guys hand...wow. I think that goliath was fed one too many times by another diver/spearfisher and got used to being handed food
BOY!!!!! I know that I would have a problem, with my bowls after that encounter, I wonder if the fisherman got hurt in any way?
Just one reason carrying a "Spare Air" bottle in waters like this is a good idea! This could've ended VERY badly; drowned free diver. Other reader's comment quite correct, this guy is a GUPPY for Goliath Groupers. Spear fishermen drown every year battling big fish. Doesn't have to be the one you actually speared.
On another note: Assuming it's legal to take Grouper here, OH YEAH..... I'd be headed back down {with bigger artillery} for some payback! Hey, whose supposed to eat who here????
After being physically shaken on the end of a line that attached my spear to my gun by a big shark that wanted the small grouper more than me, from then on I had a quick disconnect on my speargun to release the spear. To me, big grouper like that are the prime breeders and should be left alone. The smaller ones are better to eat anyway.
Just a friendly reminder from Mr. Grouper... You may be in the foodchain, but down here you are part of the foodchain and not that high in the foodchain.
A reason I stay out of the Ocean. Got to watch four 6ft+ sharks one day from the pier come down the beach and target a dog, a baby and several swimmers. All got out of the water in time, but the 8ft shark half way beached himself as he lunged for the dog that was retrieving a toy the owner was throwing/playing fetch.
I will fish from the pier of a boat, but never wading or spear fishing again.
This happens all the time when we are spearing in Goliath waters. We spear using SCUBA gear - this could have ended badly if the baby Goliath decided to take the guy for a ride.
