Video Tip: Cast Like You're Throwing a Drink
Deeter's full of tips and tricks for almost anything that relates to fly fishing - from casting, to rowing a boat correctly, or rigging your rod properly. Here he shows us how a proper backcast can improve your overall casting with a very simple visual tip.
We've got quite a few techniques on video in the can already and will be sharing them going forward. If anyone out there has anything specific they'd like answered, let us know and we'll work on it and get back to you.
We're all ears.

Kinda reminds me of the apple on a pole trick. Where you're trying to flick the apple as far as you can.
Very nice tip Deet.
I have a question. What is the best cast to a fish that is directly upstream and you do not want the line to land over the fish but you want the fly to land in front of the fish?
I use a side arm delivery and stop my line in mid forward motion and let my leader swing around almost perpendicular to the fly line but you need a lot of room for this cast. What would Deet do?
I smell a sponsorship from solo cups!!! those babies work great for beer pong as well!!!
Would you agree that the same concept applies on the forward stroke -- smooth accelerating cast and followed by a wrist snap?
Clarki... Indeed. That's what the cast is... a gradual acceleration to a STOP. Two of the biggest casting flaws are not gradually accelerating, and not stopping. Forward and back.
Buckhunter... great question. Two answers. 1, land the fly line short of the fish, but the leader extends well past it. Tricky. 2, the hinge cast, which is what you're talking about. Also tricky. Tim and I are going out on the water tomorrow and we're bringing the camera. I'll try to shoot it and put it up here. Failing that, I'll give a better description.
Sounds like some good advice, even for those who are just starting to get into fly-fishing. Helpfull tips like this are what help anglers cast better and get more fish. Thanks for the informative post
