University of Alabama Offers Flyfishing Course

By Dave Hurteau

To think, I used to have to skip my college classes to go fly fishing.

From the Tuscaloosa News:

New College Professor Michael Steinberg explains that his course, “The Arts and Science of Fly Fishing,” is not a fishing trip for a grade.

“If it were just a recreational course, I don’t think it would fly and I don’t think I would want to teach it,” Steinberg said, as students piled out of a UA van at a private farm pond and began assembling fly rods. “Through the act of fishing, we try to understand environmental conservation. People see fish as these isolated species. They don’t realize how the rest of the environment affects them.”

This is a little unrelated to the topic of the blog.

I would love to see Nick Saban attempt to fly fish. This is most likely due to my extreme disdain of the lying, cheating sob. However, just the other day I caught a local fising show (hosted by a former Alabama football player) take Nick Saban fishing for stocked rainbows in a .25 acre pond. The pond was located in the gated community on Lake Burton that Nick Saban lives in the off-season. What was so funny was that the little Nicky refused to bait his hook, touch the fish, and just couldn't figure how to hold those damned complicated spinning rods. It was a riot, although it just made my hatred for the short little b@$$stard burn even hotter.

I know I surely would have taken that class in college. Maybe I would have skipped less of my other classes to go outside if I got to do some flyfishing during a class.

Tell us how you really feel about Nick Saban! What has he done now?

YES! My grandmother taught a class in her school that contemplated VT deer hunting and what it means for conservation and the economy. It was genius, as is this class. We need more of this everywhere. This kinda thing gets me really excited.

I think it makes a lot of sense. What a great way to teach stream entomology, stream flow, fish behavior, stream health- and learn how to fish at the same time!

I took all that stuff in college, but had to meet my husband before I really learned how to fish. Ironically, my husband tells the story of how he almost flunked out of stream ecology in college because he spent too much time fishing. Years later he ran into his professor out on the water while he fished the local Maine waters. The frustrated professor wasn't do so well fishing. My husband kindly taught him a thing or two about the river, the bugs and the fish. The professor finally caught some fish that day.

WA Mtnhunter, the thing with Nicky is this: Nick will never leave Bama. They are the perfect match. A guy with no conscience and no ethics, worshiped by a fan base too stupid to value either.

In case you haven't figured out, I'm an Auburn fan. Both my siblings, my grandad, my cousins, my uncle, hell just about my whole family graduated from Auburn. It's well-known around here that Saban's not exactly a choir-boy. It's been well-documented at local high schools that Saban will illegaly visit junior recruits, by using the accidental contact loophole in the NCAA's rule book.

So where did you graduate from alabamahunter? My guess is nowhere based on the ignorant unprovoked comments you are spitting.

dgbroox, the second comment was not unprovoked. I was responding to WAMtnhunter. I meant it jokingly at that. And no, I have not graduated from college. I'm only 16, and not even a junior in high school yet.

In rebuttle to your second comment, 6 of the last seven in football. 5 of the last 6 in mens basketball. It was just a joke dude.

alabamahunter, Sorry I may have overreacted being an Alabama grad. Your blanket statement regarding a fan base too stupid to value conscience and ethics touched a nerve. I have a great education from a great University and my passion for the outdoors is a testament to my conscience and ethics. Let's stick to the subjects we have in common such as Field and Stream. That is what this web site is for.

alabamahunter and dgbroox:

Being a lifelong Alabama fan and graduate of the class of 1981, wife class of 1979 (she's a little smarter than I am), and several relative dating back to the class of 1939, I feel entitled to give a "Roll, Tide, Roll" whenever I damn well please! But I do have great respect for Auburn University and what it stands for.

There are a lot of rabid fans in both camps. Living out West, I am out of touch with the day to day politics of SEC football. But to your comment about Nick Saban never leaving Alabama, he wil damn sure be gone when he quits winning football games and SEC Championships! That's the way it is at 'Bama. Win or go home. But never forget that it is just a game....

Penn State has had this course for years. I was fortunate enought to take it my first summer of college back in 2000. We learned about a stream's eco-system, but the major focus was on tying flies and fishing techniques. The time alotted for the course just didn't allow any more in-depth coverage.

My friend who goes to SUNY Binghamton took a Fly Fishing and Tying course his first semester in college. I am sure there are a lot of small colleges who offer these courses , especially environmental colleges like Paul Smith in NY.

Well, as for the story itself.... any college that offers a course on fly-fishing is one hell of a college. I would love to take that class and actually enjoy going to it. I wonder what homework would be... creating a fly? I wish other colleges would offer classes like this. Hopefully they will offer the science and art of hunting sometime soon.
