Flyfishing Video: How to Set the Hook When Trout Fishing
Another video tip from Mr. Kirk Deeter explaining the perfect hook set for trout. We're all guilty of it at one time or another... Getting excited, and ripping the fly out of a fish's mouth or on the other side not setting hard enough. Deeter's latest tip gives us...
...the perfect example on what to think about when setting the hook when fly fishing for trout. Just lift smoothy and quickly, right up to your ear. Just like you're answering a telephone.

Great tip. I am one of the guilty ones that gets excited and rips out the hook
Well done - I love video tips! I'd love to see a steelhead hook set from the moment the angler feels a bump, to the second the reel is screaming. Problem is, this could take two days of solid filming.
That's a good idea Deeter. My hooksets depend on the strenght of my tippets. If I'm running streamers with 3x the fish is gonna feel a bit more of a jolt. While dry fly fishing I simply raise my rod tip to the upright position (depending on how much line I have on the water). If I'm nymphing I try to yank down stream.
I still like the Strike-o-matic, with it's TR proof design!
We have to start calling you Dr. Deeter. There to diagnose and prescribe fixes for our flyfishing ills.
Nothing like going from bass to trout and back again to really mess up hook sets. That's usually when a hook set sends a small trout sailing over my shoulder.
Guilty or not every one of Us at time or another made
mistakes,I usually avoid the rip out of my barbless hooks putting a little extra sharp file on its.
how many times have i set the hook out of the fish's mouth? painful!
PERFECT explanation. As a frequent plastic worm fisherman (cross their eyes) and a saltwater angler(set it two or three times as hard as you can after reeling down for "insurance") I struggle with fly rod hook-sets.
