Governator Wants California Sportsmen’s Money

By Dave Hurteau

From The Sacramento Bee:

Fishermen and hunters are outraged about a plan tucked in the governor's proposed California budget to shift $30 million out of wildlife programs.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to borrow money from the Fish and Game Preservation Fund. . . [to be] repaid to wildlife programs by 2013 – with interest.
Critics, however, want the money to stay where it is. . . .

"They've made some big blunders and caused problems for themselves, and it shouldn't be fishing licenses that hook them out," said Frank Hashorva, a member of the Rancho Murieta Fishing Club. "It's totally absurd."

I see New York isn’t the only state facing budget crunch issues on Fish and Wildlife.
New York Conservation budgets will be looted whether those funds are dedicated or not...judging the antics of our state governor.

Matters have gone so far that to save the NY Pheasant Stocking program and the one game farm that hatches those birds a restraining order was filed preventing the Governor’s Office closing the program and facility. My state senator wrote stating to save the program he’s suggesting the creation of a pheasant hunting stamp [$20] to fund the state’s pheasant program. I also just learned to there will be a $10 trout and salmon stamp These stamps represent a 50% increase in small game and the fishing license fee. There’s no guarantee these additional fees will go to state fish and wildlife budgets.

Folks, The fix is in!!!!!

California has a government office called the Gambling Control Commission that has 80 employees but for some reason warrants a budget of about $109 Million. Even if we discount 75% of that as overhead and operating expenses, that means that the average employee in that department is paid $300K per year.

Balancing the budget at the expense of Sportsmen strikes me as an unreasonable response, given how low the bar has been set with respect to efficient use of funds in other California state offices.

Our CA wildlife programs are already over-stressed and under-funded. Pulling $30million out of the wildlife funds for the general fund is only going to make it worse.

The CA State Constitution clearly states that the funds from hunting and fishing licenses cannot be used for the general fund, and this plan is little more than a barely legal end-around to bypass the constitution. Sportsmen and sportsmen's legal defense and lobbying organizations should be up in arms and getting vocal to stop this thing.
