Tip of the Day: Bust the Roost for Henned-Up Gobblers

By Jerome B. Robinson

A gobbler that roosts with hens in the trees around him will be nearly impossible to call in next morning. One way to change the situation is to intentionally flush the birds off their roosts at the first crack of dawn, then follow in the direction they fly and set up short of where you think they landed. Persistent calling like a lost hen may then attract the gobbler to you before the real hens have a chance to regroup with him. -- Jerome B. Robinson

Very good tip, I have done this inadvertently by trying to sneak to a spot before sun-up and spooking birds off the roost by accident. More times than not, I killed a bird those mornings.

When do turkey hunting seasons start in other states? I know that it doesn't until april (ugh) in North Dakota, but does this topic mean that spring turkey is near in other states?

This has worked for me a number of times. IMO best time to do it is right after they fly up the night before you plan to hunt. It's important to make enough ruckus to scatter them in all directions. Set up right there the next morning and old Hopalong just might come on the run. Got my best (26lb 1 3/8" spurs) that way. He almost ran me over when a Jake gobbled behind me and I turned my head to make it sound like the hen he was talking to (me) was going to the Jake.
