16-Year-Old Wild Arizona Jaguar Dies When Tranquilized

By Dave Hurteau

From The Arizona Republic:
Jaguars are protected as an endangered species, but on Monday night one of the rare felines was euthanized after being captured, released and recaptured by state authorities.
The jaguar, about 16 years old, was put down because of failing kidneys.

And from a Republic update:
Investigation into the conditions surrounding Macho B's death suggests that stress and tranquilizers aggravated the jaguar's kidney problems, which led to the decision to euthanize him Monday.

The news prompted calls for a review of the Arizona Game and Fish Department's protocol and better protection for endangered species.

It is a shame, but the jag was in failing health. Collaring it was the right thing to do, but the consequence was regrettable and freakishly unlucky.

This is sad. I'm from AZ and know of at least 2 people (one hunter and one guide) that have spotted jaguars in S. AZ. That would be absoulte euphoria for me. It's amazing how many "exotic" species acutally call the US home. The AZ G&F does a great job keeping up with the jaguars.
